I was in my local tire/auto store getting new tires on my buggy; '05 F250. While I was waiting, a customer came in for an oil change on a "newer" F150 with the same engine and the shop owner told the "parts guy" to get 7 qts. of oil ready. The parts guy asked what weight and I hollered,"5W20". the owner said no way in %^&* he would put that in a FORD engine with more than 100,000 miles. Mine happens to have 145,000 miles on it. Is there any truth to what he says or should I be looking for a new mechanic?  BTW, his reasoning is the wear on internal components that require a thicker oil to compensate. Thanks

I understand his reasoning but I don't agree with it. If so it seems Ford would put that in the owners manuel to change weights after 100000 miles. I would run what Ford says to run in the gas engines. Because I am in NC I still run 15w40 in the new Ford diesel and not the 10w-30 Ford recommends. But gas engines I run what Ford says

Not saying your choice I wrong but I ran two 5.4s over 300,000 miles and my current one is a V10 at 200,000 same engine plus 2 cyl. All in 3/4 ton trucks with 5w-30 Shell Formula oil. Only one of them even had a valve cover off. The 05 needed cam phasers at 250K. Two important things about the modular ford engines, use the 820S Motorcraft filter for the silicone anti drainback valve and keep oil in them, never seen one that didn't use a bit of oil and I suspect that A lot of the bad ones were run out of oil.

On my '99 F150 with over 200K I run the Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W20 or 5W30 but like Butch says I always use the 820S oil filter.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

Since I have owned this truck, 3 years/31,000 miles, I have used that filter; Wal-Mart for less than $4.00. Thanks guys.
