Hi All-

My factory power steering on my D14 is acting sporadically; at times it steers fairly easily both ways, but other times it takes a lot of muscle to turn especially to the left and other times there is a fair amount of chatter when turning.   I figure it's time to inspect the control valve body.  I've read previous posts/topics on the Forum about the D14 power steering problems, and it sounds like the problem may be a "sticky" valve spool that is not moving freely?  What this be a good starting point for trying to figure out the problem, not an expert on this topic?  Thanks in advance...

The smart guys on the forum must be on vacation.  I have rebuilt a couple of these, and it takes some time, and attention to detail to get one to work well when done.  Make sure you have a factory ALLIS service manual, and the right torque wrench.

That being said.....

The first thing I would do is check the pump pressure, I would hate to have you tear open a steering valve that really didn't need it.  Just another stupid question, have you checked the oil level?

Update on the D14 power steering, to be more specific, while the tractor is parked and running, I can stand on the ground and turn the wheel all the way to the right with one finger, but I can't hardly turn the wheel to the left with two hands (much like manual steering) and does not want to fully deflect , seems to bind when going to the left.  Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.....thx.

Have you replaced ujoint or an thing on steering shaft?
with engine off, turn steering wheel and watch shaft at valve. It should move in and out the same amount both directions.
Would pull valve, replace orings, seal, and readjust. Make sure clamps are tight on suction hose.        MACK

Left hand turn difficult ?? sounds like the pin is sheared off on the steering rack/ram.

To the original poster: if you have described the problem accurately, a sheared/broken pin on the steering cylinder end is your problem.

Orange Blood, MACK, and DrAllis thanks so much for the feedback.......DrAllis, looks like removal of the bolster, radiator and frame rails is in order to take a look at the hydraulic cylinder/steering rack pin connection?!   Thanks so much......

You can remove the radiator shell and then the square cover on the right side and look in and see if the pin is sheared off. Have front wheels jacked up a bit to take the load off them. Drain the oil first before removing cover. You might have to turn the steering wheel back and forth to see what I think is broken. Repairs might be done by removing right side frame ( with a jack underneath the bell housing) and sneaking the cylinder and rack out the back. It has to be timed when reassembling so it turns equally left and right.
