I was driving my Ford F250 home when I lost all power and lights. Where I live there is not a shoulder next to the highway. So it being dark I had a guy use his pickup to tow me about 1/2 out of harms way. He pulled me and I just put the tranny in neutral. He never exceed 15 mph. Did I burn up the tranny? I knew that your not supposed to tow an automatic unless you take out the drive line but being stuck where I was and knowing how people dont pay attention, let alone it was 9:30 at night I felt it was best to just get the pick up off the highway. Anyway I think I might buy me some flares in case this ever happens again. That was a sick feeling. I had to stand out next to the highway and try to flag people down to let them know my pick up was in the middle of the road. Sheesh sorry for the long post, Thanks God nobody was hurt!!! Now back to the original question, when i get my pick up running again is the transmission fried?

I'll bet everything is fine. Those bearings and surfaces have a good oil film on them to last a little while, and towing doesn't put much stress on anything. Did you lose the main battery fuse? (the bit 100 or 200 amp fuse)

I agree with JB. 15 MPH and is that 1/2 mile? If so, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hurst, I dont know if I lost that fuse, where is it located? I replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator............is that fuse under the dash or is it an in line fuse

I'm sure you'll be fine. Its more long distances at high speed that nukes them when being towed.

I really doubt that you hurt anything, but even if you had, you did the right thing!
I had a similar experience many years ago when one of Chrysler's exploding transmissions took out the main wiring harness in a Caravan.....no lights, no parking gear in trans, no power brakes, just a lot of schrapnel and trans fluid on the road. All i had was the parking brake in the middle of a turn.

There is a secondary fuse box on my f250D over the drivers side front fender, maybe yours might have one too.

Depending on the year, there is also a huge breaker or fuselink attached to the drivers side inner fender. They love to go green and shut down most of the electronics.
Have a boo in there while your tinkering. If you need any wiring diagrams I work at a Ford Dealership.
