I restored my old Allis back to running condition just over 5 years ago. Has the Buda D175 which was really abused and in bad shape. Having said that, it now has 250 hrs on it since it's been back in service and never run better. I decided to swap it out a few years ago with a Deere or Detroit. Found an old 1958 Detroit 2-53 and rebuilt that to replace the Buda. The day has finally come to swap out the Buda for the Detroit. I'll post videos for those of you that are interested.:)

Test fitting the 2-53 into Allis. It's a tight fit, but fit's pretty nice. The Detroit is 31" compared to 26" for the Buda.

Some more progress on the Detroit 2-53 swap.:) I've got the engine mounted and started in the Allis for the first time. Just finished up the flywheel last weekend, I joined the Buda and Detroit flywheels together and works perfect. Now working on the hydraulic pump while the flywheel is off getting balanced.:) On the home stretch now.:)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-jZSlnuZCE

Maybe its a trick of perspective, but that muffler looks mighty close to where I assume you sit.

Have to question this project. HD-5 was unpowered with the 2-71 detriot. I would be looking for a 3-71 or 4-53 if I was going to go with a Detriot and I like the sound they make. The 3-71 in my HD-7 has a sweet sound.

I chose the 2-53 for it's size as the 2,3-71 and 3,4-53 are just too large to fit in the chassis. The 2-53 is 40HP and 120 ftlbs of torque which was what the Buda D-175 had. It's the perfect Detroit for this swap.:) |

Allis comes off the stands this coming week. Back in service again after the 4 month Detroit swap. Few little things to tidy up, but there's not much left to finish.:) Here's a quick video.:)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztpRd6kubag

Nice job, well done!! I'm amazed that you could do this in such a tight engine room. It'll be a bit of a balancing act to keep high enough RPM to keep the Detroit happy over the long range. So much activity with forklifts in tight spaces happen with low throttle. You'll definitely be happy to climb on and turn the key as often as you need something moved or lifted

Thanks, it sure is tight.:) A lot of challenges getting it to fit and the last piece of the puzzle it the counter weight and exhaust routing:) Looking forward to seeing how it shakes out.:)

What a hoot, finally got the Detroit out of the shop.:) It runs really nice, totally different than the Buda, but works as well. I'll finish up the exhaust and put the counterweight on in the coming days. Here's a video of it running around for the first time.:)

That's great, pretty much mission accomplished. It's very convenient that you can wind up the RPM now and then by cruising across that big parking lot. I was always very conscious about my Detroits idling more than comfort would allow. I really appreciated how easy the Detroits would never overheat (providing everything was in order). With our hot summers it used to be common to see import excavators run with the hood open because of overheating - never a Detroit under the same conditions.
Thanks for your good video work in sharing your project with us.

A310- A good bit of mechanical engineering work done to make this work - credit to all of your excellent knowledge in doing this!. Maybe I missed it, did you machine an adapter plate to merge the detroit to the bellhousing?
Keep up the great work! ~ Respectfully Orangeman

Thanks, no need for any adapters as the Buda and Detroit share the same #4 Flywheel housing, the the trans bolted on. I did however have to machine the Buda flywheel to fit inside the Detroit flywheel as I could not find a Detroit flywheel that would work. The two were machined on a firends lathe and then pressed together to form one flywheel.:)

Update video.:) Coming up to the 19hr mark now on the Detroit swap and running great. Cobbled together a video working the little Jimmy and what it sounds like. Certainly doesn't need a backup alarm.:)

Thanks for the update, it's good to see your project being a total success. For those of us that like Detroit 2-cycle there is free music to go every time on start up
