That's close to what the prototype looked like. I have seen a video of the early D-21 at the proving grounds that look close to that.

I'm certainly glad the designers at Allis Chalmers abandoned the idea of that ugly look for the D21 and went with the uniquely good looks of the production D21 tractors. It would have been great had Allis Chalmers use the same production D21 styling on more tractors. That MD21 is like looking at an AMC Pacer a which looked like a Ford Pinto with a bee sting. I can't really like the 7000 & 8000 series either although they are not as ugly as that MD21. That's just my opinion, you are welcome to yours.

I’ve never seen an MD21. Thanks for sharing the photo Fred. It would have been a great proving grounds prototype ~ competition scouts probably figured it was just another D19? Glad Industrial dept design team got final vote for their D21 good looks.

The actual D-21 prototype pics I have seen from the right side, appeared to have a D-262-T D-19 turbo engine. It was easily identified by the intake manifold and glow plug. Not saying they all had that engine (I doubt they did) but at least one of them did have the turbo'd Buda instead of the D-3400 engine.

That could have been the utility version and with 540/1000 RPM PTO would have been a tractor ahead of its time.Also good loader tractor.

The picture is of a replica of the prototype D21 as seen in that video. It was commissioned and is owned by Rich Bergeson. It is the best replication that could be built in a very short time and on a budget. I'm just home from seeing it in person. The original prototype had a Waukesha engine as did the prototype B and WC. I speculate that the rear end and transmission were ready for testing but not the 3400 engine so AC went down the road a got the Waukesha so at least half the tractor was tested. The current prototype replica has a 301,
