Tore apart my starter and found the spring was broken on the starter drive. Ordered a new starter drive replacement to my local parts store but not for sure if they got the right part. Anybody know what part I actually need? Trying to upload a picture but it won’t let me. I also lost the set screw that ties the starter drive to the shaft. It’s a set screw with a pinned end. Anybody know where I could buy a new one?

IF it doesn't look exactly like the broken drive, it probably won't work. 
The Delco Remy starters and Prestolite starters on D17 gas share the same 9 tooth drive. 
 Any shop that repairs starters should have the pinned set screw, or check with local AGCO Dlr. 
 My local NAPA store used to have several assortments with misc parts for Distributors, Starters, Generators, early Alternators. I've no idea if it was just them or if they're common.

Most of the new drives use a shielded clutch mechanism instead of the old spring design.

Thank you. I ordered the part through Napa. Going to call remy delco in Pendleton, IN as they’re the closest to me and more than likely the same place this starter came from in the first place. For sure original. Only reason it broke was the top bolt backed its way out enough to make the starter loose and I’m guessing the flywheel caught it and broke the spring at some point. Guessing i finally got to the point that the starter wouldn’t hit the flywheel as I’ve never checked the bolts in the 15 years I’ve been running the tractor.

That’s pretty much all I can find. Hoping whatever part I’m getting from Napa will work. Thanks for the info because I was wondering if they changed it moving away from the spring.

I have a few NOS Delco drive springs for both CW & CCW rotation starter drives.  I'd need a picture of what you have to know which you need. I probably have the drive screw you need also.
