So I am working on my new project. No spark. It has a mag. Is there any way to test these things? Points look good. I swapped out condensers. What about the coil? Can I test it like a standard distributor coil? Also, a mag will work with no wires running to it correct? They are self contained systems? Been a long time sense I messed with one of these antiques!

Disconnect the kill wire at the mag and try it. Still no spark, got an ohm meter? I can't say right off what the coil resistance would be, but it should be lower on the primary side and higher on the secondary side. Open circuit on either is a failure. Otherwise, a known good condenser and points and it still doesn't work, probably needs a coil. This assumes the magnet has not lost it's strength.
I should add that make sure the cap has no cracks, carbon tracks, etc.

Thanks Brian. I have swapped out just about everything other than the coil at this point. It all looks good but I am pretty unfamiliar with the magnetos. I am getting the kids together to go visit family right now, hopefully I will have some time later to work on it.

Hi Glock!

Okay, some basic notes about the mag: Yes, it's self-contained- the only external connection, would be for a kill switch.  The terminal needs to be ungrounded to operate... ground it to shut her down.  Oftentimes there's a little thumb-springy thing so you can shut it down if there's no remote kill switch.

In order for the mag to work properly, it needs to have good magnets, and the points and condenser need to be in good shape.  Now, I'm fairly good with magnetos, but there's a few guys around that have complete magneto-test units, they can go through and set 'em up to be back to original state.  For what it's worth, when you see a magneto (or any ignition) fire in open-air, the spark you see may appear adequate, but under compression, will simply not be.

Next, magnetos on Allis B/C's and others have a device on 'em called an IMPULSER... it's a spring-loaded thing that not only spins the magneto armature FAST when hand-cranking, it also retards the spark 'till AFTER TDC, to make for safer, easier starting.  IF the impulser isn't functioning properly, you may find yourself 1) not getting it to start, or 2) with a broken arm from it kicking back.

I'd suggest talking to your local tractor/old engine enthusiasts, dragging 'em over for a look, finding out who your local MagGuru is, and taking the mag in for some TLC on the test bench... otherwise it sounds like you'll be pulling out your hair trying to get it going.

Glockhead,  Don't forget we are lucky to have an expert who is a Forum Member.  Steve NJ can be of assistance in this field.  He has the parts and the knowledge to put your mag to running right.
Listen closely to what has been said above.  If it were me I would be the coil, but I am not an expert in this field. 
Try a coil and remember to check if you are getting a click when you turn the mag.  If not it will be an impulse spring.
Let us know how it goes.  I keep forgetting these things are at least 55 years old and some are pushing 70.  Things happen that I never thought could so after you do all the basics let Steve test your mag to see if there is something that has been overlooked.

OK, I dug around at my Dads. I found three mags. I am certain I can build one good one out of the three. I know one of these are good. My Dads C ran fine on it but he switched it to a distributer for some reason.

You know, You may have one good mag in your group of used mags.  Try them - put a wire in the number one position and clamp the ear into a vice.  Take a pair of plyers and snap the mag till you get some fire from the wire. 

If you get a good blue spark you are doing OK and can probably use that mag

Many time a thing as simlpe as running a piece of fine sandpaper, doubled over, between the points to clean them, will make all of the difference in the world.
What does the coil look like? If it is the old paper and black tar type, it is probably bad. The new one are red plastic coated and hold up much better. Good Luck. Bob

Try using chemical cleaner on the points instead of emery paper. They will probably last longer afterwords.
 
If you got 3 mags, clean the points on all 3 and try them. My experience buying "mag cores", tells me that 1 out of 3 only needs the points cleaned and you got a runner.

I plan on working on them today. The mags I have are slightly different than the one on the tractor. One has the red coil. The rest have the black tar stuff. I am going to get the rest of the WD's and the parts today also. I will make a new post about that when I get them home.

C/B has spark and sputered a few times till the starter switch failed. I think it will run shortly.

No it didn't! I need a hand crank for these b's and c's still. Makes things a lot easier sometimes. I am trying to find TDC so I can get the mag timed close enough to get it running now. Any TDC tips? Thumb over the plug hole? Piston stop? What is the prefered Allis way of finding #1 TDC?

Jesse, put your thumb over number 1 hole and turn it over till you feel compression. you can then stick a light wire in the plug hole to tell when the piston stops coming up. You really need a hand crank for this though.

You need to use a hand crank (After you feel pressure in #1) and have someone watch for FIRE on the flywheel
