   You do not have to change the ammeter when going from 6 to 12 volt,providing the genny is the same one.Most gennys put out a max of 15-20 amps.Rewiring the genny for 12 volt ,only requires new field coils and doesn't increase the amp output (charge rate).If it's the original genny for the tractor you're ok.
Unlike alternators where you really have to read the specs as the same size 'shell' can house 35 amp to 200 amp components !
Just be sure when rewiring to inspect the insolating bushings on the ammeter mounting bracket. They deteriorate over time and will cause failures.Just replaced the ones on my G with new nylon shoulder washers,now it's good forever.
