I have had this JD A for a couple of years, I bought it from a guy that was going to restore it but it just sat. It was free when I got it and I had the Carb rebuilt on it and put a new oil filter in it and oil. Before I put the oil in I drained the old crap out, it was a mixture of oil and water and then flushed it with some cheap oil and then put new in. Well I finially got it to fire the other night and noticed it had been leaking oil from the oil pump cover. WHen I got it to fire I never let it run it would fire and then I would shut it off. Well Tonight I went to drain the oil and all that came out was a little oil and some nasty water. This tractor has been sitting outside since I got it, I just got it in the shop a few weeks back. First what is the best way to clean out the crankcase of all the old crap, second do I have to make a new gasket for the oil pump cover or can you buy them third does ANYBODY have a shop manual for this tractor. I would like an original JD manual. Forth if I use diesel or kerosene to flush it out do I need to flush it with oil before I put the new stuff in to make sure all the diesel and kerosene is out. Should I put another new filter in, thanks for the help. Feel free to email me hommer_76@yahoo.com

What model is it? Water could be getting through a bad head gasket. I don't think a little diesel or kero is going to hurt. I would try to find where the water is coming from. Hope this helps.

There are several places that water could be getting into your A. I do not remember if all of the A series used brass tubes for the push rods in the heads, the tubes have been known to go bad and leak water into the oil. Also the crankcase cover will let water in if the gasket is bad. That gasket is usually made out of cork. On the ones that I have cleaned out I have removed the crankcase cover and washed it out through this opening. The oil pump gaskets were available from Deere a couple of years ago, the one that goes on the pump gear cover is about as thin as a newspaper. Good Luck. Thanks

Could it be just condensation? There wasnt alot of water and I dont think it had any antifreeze in it. WHen I put diesel or kerosene in it to clean it out should I crank it a few times with the coil off? Where is the crankcase cover located?
