Hey all, I am looking at a HD7G crawler loader tomorrow, and I would like to know where all the oil check/dipstick locations are on the the rear end, transmission, and specifically the torque converter. The machine runs, but doesn't move, so I want to start with the basics.
Thanks for the help. Anthony

7G has but one rear dipstick, is for the brake/clutch housings, bevel gear case and transmission all. As you step into the machine at your foot at the left side of the operator seat. Fill point is a raised tube beneath the seat(1/2" square drive plug). Oil is 10 weight, hydraulic as it also feeds the transmission clutches, this is a wet brake machine. Finals are checked at the rear, two large female square drive plugs, one to each finals case low on the main housing, 90W oil here.
Fluid in trans should be on stick to start, checked running and in neutral for actual operating level. Two hydraulic pumps, a tandem pump at the top right of the torque housing, takes suction off the tans sump(screen inside the four bolt block) and the deposits to the left hand side of the main rear housing, this feeds the main screen
suction sump on the trans left side and just below the transmission filter housing. All positions are based on sitting in the operator seat. Last there are two small high pressure filters fed from the second tandem pump mounted to the engine timing cover below the injection pump, this is the steering/brakes feed pump and the filters are as you step in from the left side behind the cover under the shifter. Single large suction tube to it has three rubber flex joints buried inside the frame along the block, can suck air both on this pump and the main hydraulic trans pump here. If has been run very long sucking air will cook both pumps eventually. Screens are really fine mesh and choke on debris pretty easy. One often forgotten lube level is the recoil spring housings on both track truck frames, large plug on the side accesses this reservoir. My machine:

Thanks for the detailed information, it certainly will be helpful. I purchased an operators manual last night, but I won't have it before I go up there today. I greatly appreciate it.

When you get to the machine, if no batteries I used two group 31 12 volts with a jumper between to get 24v, will be positive ground unless had been changed to a alternator. The trans oil as stated should at least be on the stick, one to two inches up. The torque gets fed oil from the trans off the hoses connecting them. The tandem pump on the converter housing, as noted one suction from trans sump, second suction from screen assembly on left front of trans about halfway dawn the face. The filter housing for the trans covers this. First suction/discharge sends oil to the second sump/screen, that in turn feeds the pump to feed the hydraulic system for tranny thru the filter. Each clutch assembly has its own hydraulic feed and filter behind the panel just under the shifter, you will see the lines snaking up thru the fender support into that area under the left floor panel.
My donor tractor trans hydraulic pump drive shaft/gear had been welded as the splines had sheared rotationally, just like the old Detroit Blower drives used to do, could be same here.
This is the face of my replacement trans, screen is to the right, this would face forward. |

If the old monster had not been serviced in awhile the filters could all be choked up, will not feed enough oil in that condition to really do any work. If can get it running look at drive shaft thru floor board cracks, should be spinning shortly after started indicating the torque is filled, then slip into any speed and see if it stops, if it does but won't move and shaft turns slowly then probably clutches slipping from lack of fluid pressure.
