 Topic: Hydraulic Fluid or Type A ATF??

The hydraulic reservoir on a Gleaner C2 says to use Type A transmission oil. Considering that the combine is mid 60's vintage and 45 + years old, would a universal hydraulic oil be a suitable "modern day" substitute? Are there certain required characteristics of Type A that would not be found in regular hydraulic oil? If regular hydraulic oil would be suitable, are the two compatible or would the hydraulic system need to be drained and purged? Anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

I would leave the type A oil in it. Otherwise you would have to get all of it flushed out of lines and cylinders. Not worth the time and money to change to new oil in my opinion.

Type A ATF has been replaced by listings by Dextron, I would not add universal hydraulic or any other hydraulic oil into it.

Some properties of it are different and the interchange would be ill advised. Hyd fluid in itself is not the problem but if there are any clutch or other type items in the system the type A is made for those. I used both type A , 10/30 oils in straight hyd systems as well as hyd oil, but in anything calling for Universal fluid I use just that.

The Gleaner A hydraulics will work with just about any hydraulic fluid. It has a gear or vane pump and a couple of hydraulic cylinders. You do not need tge addatives for clutchs.

Before you go swinging a can of hydraulic fluid n your case, read up on type A and Dexron, they are compatible, others may not even as others have used them without issues:

Wiki did make a mistake on Dex6. GM says it is reverse compatible will all variations of Dexron ever produced.
