How much torque do you think a D17 rear end and power director take. We are going to build a lengthened D17 with a V8. If any one has done this with a D17 did they remove the power director and run straight to the rear end. I would like to run just the V8 with a scatter shield and no transmission with a shaft back to the tractor input shaft and kepp the PD. There is a guy pulling around here that uses a 350 with an Allison auto out of a bus.

The Power Director clutch would be suspect to fly apart/explode with speeds over 4000 rpm on a continuous basis. The rearend/transmission will take a lot when you only weigh 5000-5500 lbs. Modern day tire cutting(and mechanical sleds) usually leaves you with short lug bar depth which cuts down on starting traction stress on the driveline.

we have a local guy in our pulling group that has a v8 mod D17.  He still has the power directer in the tractor with a 350 chevy.  He runs I would say 5500 rpm down the track when he gets up to speed. It runs very well.  He does not shift the power directer on the go but he does use the high and low sides.  It is just for the short 300 ft track.  The time spent over 4000 rpm is only 10 seconds and his pull is over.  He has never had problems and did very well.  I can give you his name and number if you would like to talk to him about it.  I hope this helps!
