We have a one seventy diesel, bought it around 6500 hours, were at 9750 now on it, but while on the road it just died. Not even a chug. We pulled it home and did the usual things. Clean sediment bowl, change fuel filters. We did that then primed until diesel come out by injector pump. Still wouldn't start. So we pull started it and got it going. It will run wide open if we pull it, but if you throttle down or try to drive it it just dies. We looked at the bleeders on the pump. We got diesel out the bottom one but not the top. Does this mean injector pump rebuild? Sorry for being long winded, just don't want to rebuild it if not necessary. Thanks in advance

sounds like a fuel delivery to the pump problem. Those have a feed pump too, so make sure that is working, and not just dumping fuel into the crankcase. Also, there's been some problems with the new fuel filters, people seem to think a seal ring goes on the inside edge on the top of the element, and all that does is plug the fuel flow going into the filter element. Sometimes they will run, but not have any power, because the seal will get a hump in it, and it will let a small amount through. I've seen this several times in the last few years.

Ed, could you explain the seal a little better, I was confused on it but the guy that was helping me wasn't worried about it. That would make sense. It never did anything before this.

those filters come with several square cut seals, and there needs to be one up in the header, in a groove, another below the element next to the glass bowl, and another at the bottom of the bowl to seal the bottom piece. Also an oring goes on the center post to seal the clean and dirty sides, and possibly a small oring for the bolt that holds it all together. Those CAV filters have changed over the years, so there may be a difference in what you have. The important part though, is there is no seal that just lays in the top of the element, that is now where the fuel passage is. These used to have a series of holes to pass fuel.

This had two filters, we replaced the one on inj pump side with no glass. I wanted to replace both, but again, I'm just the dumb kid.
