    Posted: 03 Nov 2017 at 5:05pm
Hello it has been crazy busy here all summer and I haven't checked in here in a long time. Today my d15 started running rough when I pulled the valve cover to see why it sounded like one of the valves wasn't opening right I found out there is no oil getting to the head. I pulled the line that comes out of the block and goes up to the head and there is no oil coming out of the block. I pulled the line off the filter output and there is plenty of oil being pumped to the lower end when you turn the motor over. I have already destroyed the lifter assembly the rod is all worn out and a couple of the lifters are broken up pretty bad. I wanted to ask what could be causing the lack of oil getting to the head. I am thinking the motor spun the cam bearing but I wanted to check before I took the motor apart to see what my options are. This motor was rebuilt a few years back and has been run for 2 years since the rebuild doing a fair amount of work on a small farm. I am sure there was oil getting to the head when it was rebuilt because I had a bad oil filter right out of the box from NAPA and once it was replaced i double checked the oil flow with the valve cover off to be sure it was getting oil. So any advice on how to get my tractor back up and running would be great. I want to make sure I get it right so I don't end up here again. Of course it is my loader tractor I need for cleaning my barn our and snow removal so I need to get it going quickly.

If it has the old style filter, check to see if the rod going up into the filter, is there.

The only oil filters I use on my D14s are Fram, C-159 and you MUST have that tube in them !

The oil pressure would be zilch - nada without the tube, yes?

D15 Series II engines use a full flow filter, not the cotton style filters.

Yes, but both style filter bases bolt up to the same 2 holes, in the block.  I've seen early style bases, bodged onto a newer block...Wink

hmm how about disconnecting the 'feed' tube and blowing some low pressure air into it? If it's clear, air comes out up top
IF it's blocked , you'll get a face full of oil...

I was thinking the same thing to blow air through the line to make sure it was clear. or maybe a small stiff cable run through it/
Dan was there good oil pressure on the gage? i know the gage is near the filter.
As mentioned I did have a WD without the vertical tube. I got that fixed soon after I got the tractor.

Dan73:

What the heck are you doing to the poor old D15 SII with the 160 block?  LOL

Recommend you pull the oil feed supply that exits the bellhousing and check for oil supply.

My guess is the roll pin that connects the cam gear to the oil pump went tits up!

If no pressure there - time to pull the block and inspect the oil pump.  If I was there could help you out.   Have a machinist make up a harden roll pin if defective.

I am beginning to think this d15 doesn't like me.
I have the correct full flow oil filter setup and there is good pressure on the output side of the filter going into the block. But the little line that comes back out of the middle of the block and goes up to the head has no oil coming out. Which means no oil to the governor or the head. The lines are all clear and I have it unhooked from the block itself and there is still no oil when you start the tractor. I am guessing the oil flow is through the cam and then up to the head and there is a cam bearing with both two holes that passes the oil to that little hole in the block but I don't know for sure. I was hoping someone could tell me before I pulled the cam. At this point I am wondering if the bearing spun or was put in wrong when the motor was rebuilt. But I honestly think it had flow to the head when it was first rebuilt a few years ago.

Most likely yes the bearing has spun, not allowing the oil to come up.

On my last 2 engine rebuilds,
I had to drill out the hole on the middle cam bearing, as it did not line up correct.

Just a quick update. I got a new used lifter assembly the other day and just found the time to get it installed. Turned out the bearing in the middle of the cam wasn't installed right when it was rebuilt. Hoping now that nothing else is damaged. Drilled the bearing and have oil to the head now. Time will tell but I am keeping my fingers crossed nothing else looks bad at a quick glance and it is too cold and windy to do more right now. I am a little worried because I have run the d15 for about 2 years since it was rebuilt but at the moment everything looks ok.

Well I probably should have pulled the cam but I didn't.

I overhauled a D14 engine about 3 years ago, the guy didn't line up the center cam bearing hole. I just took the fitting out of the block and drilled a hole in the cam bearing with a long (I think 1/8 bit), started it and let the oil flush out the chips, then put the fitting and lines back on.
