The generator on my gas D-17 was replaced some owners ago with a diesel generator which has suddenly quit working. The diesel gen has a splined shaft, maybe for a tach drive, that sticks out the back. My question is whether the diesel gen has any more "value" than a standard gen. Any loss to just turning the diesel gen in as a core? Are there any usual problem areas with these generators? Darn thing just quit working...

It could also be the regulator. Or.......you might want to check to make sure the brushes aren't worn to the point they're "hanging up" and not contacting the commutator. Sometimes you can push them back down and re polarize the system to get it charging again. But that is a temporary fix and it will need new brushes.
The fact that it has that splined shaft out the back makes it uncommon, to say the least! I'm guessing there might be someone out there that needs it enuf they might trade for a correct gas generator?

The shaft coming out the back of you generator is for earlier D17 diesels that had power steering - that splined shaft drives the ps pump. Aside from that, I believe it is the same generator as a gas model.

DSeries4 has it right; the early D17Ds had the PS pump mounted on the back of the generator. Also agree with Brian, the gennie may be in need of brushes and/or the VR is the culprit. The generator is not "rare", as some Chevies and other GM vehicles used the same setup for their power steering pumps. One could probably mount a hydraulic pump off the back of the gennie and have live hydraulics with a minimum of fuss.

That generator is worth way more than "core" on a regular gen. Ask any body that has had to replace one on a D17 diesel. I looked for an armature with the splined shaft for quite a while before finding a rebuilder that had one, repeat, one. If the armature is good, let me know what you want for it.

I need what I got to hold the belt on. This will have to wait till winter at which time I will decide if there is a core for sale. Thanks for all the info.
