Is there anyone out there that restores the D series gas gauges? Mine needs a new face, and the magnet evidently went bad. I know reproductions are available, but sometimes the old equipment is better than the new stuff. Dave.

I have D-14 guage available. Pretty good shape, may need a new cork? This is the type on tank, must be different than what your after based on your discription

What size/weight cork is required? Are all D series the same?

What I need is for a D-17. The rod on the 14 may be shorter.

I don't think weight of cork is an issue since the cork floats. It would just have to be heavy enough to float the rod.

The cork is not the issue on mine, the face is not readable and the magnet must need to be remagnetized.

Where does a magnet work inside these guages? Under quick inspection it appears [ on my D-14 guage] that the rod lifts by cork up/down, turns sprocketed joint and needle revolves, is there a magnet underneath pointer that comes into play? Just inquiring alway's willing to learn

It has a U shaped magnet on the rod that turns on the fuel side. The magnet is able to move the pointer through the metal.

If the info helps, I recently replaced the float (and gas gauge gasket) on our D-14. I purchased, as Bob pointed out, a Model A gauge float which you can see in the photo with the whole assembly sitting on the hood. Got the float from Snyder's in New Springfield, Ohio but they're available from many sources. Ford Part No. A-9313-C. And yes, only a few dollars. With the new float, the gauge is working like a champ.
