Santa brought me a Nelson #233450 muffler . I pulled the 2 year old Stanley and the Nelson won't fit . Looks like the rain skirt is gonna need massaging . Just thought I'd ask if anyone else has had this issue ? I replaced my exhaust/intake manifold a few years ago . Maybe the repop ain't quite right ? THANKS !!

Is the muffler sitting an inch or so to the left, and won't fit the sheet metal of the hood?

No, it won't line up enough to fit down in the manifold . I was hoping someone else had also run into this before I started making it fit . Thanks for your reply

I put a new muffler on my D14 2 years ago and I had to trim back the rain shirt a bit.  I matched it up to the old Nelson that I had taken off and noticed it did not look the same.  After all was said and done, I got it to fit.

Here is the Nelson muffler on an aftermarket D14/D15 manifold. Looks like the rain shield would have to be trimmed to slide the muffler into the manifold. From the way the manifold is shaped, looks like the original D14/D15 manifolds would have the same problem. I will test a muffler on an original manifold when I get a chance.

On the WD45/D17 aftermarket overseas manifolds, the square bosses that have the threaded holes for the muffler bolts need to be ground down so the Nelson muffler can slide all the way on. (The square bosses stick out too far) That doesn't appear to be the case on the D14/15 though.

I'm beginning to think the threaded bosses on my manifold need to be ground down also . Oh well , if I can find my old rusty manifold I'll see how the muffler fits it .

Alex, can you post a pic of the muffler bottom showing how the tube is made? I would like to have one if I can cut that shield off and clamp the tube. Thanks, Tracy

The pipe fits down into the manifold and the skirt holds everything in place.  Therefore, cutting off the skirt would remove any way of supporting the muffler.
In this picture, the old Nelson muffler is on the right and my new one is on the left.

Myron, I have threaded all my manifolds , not sure that one would have enough sticking out.I have a short pipe threaded into them, slide the muffler down over that and use a muffler clamp. No wiggles or leaks. I never liked that type that bolted to the flange. Thanks, Tracy

Tracy , the Nelson inlet tube is 1.25 " long . My Stanley has 2.25" inlet . I also pulled my O.E. manifold out of the scrap pile and put it in my vise . Nelson muffler won't slide into place on it either . In all fairness I have "fine tuned" the skirt a little . I'm moving on to something else before I really make a mess . THANKS

Finally got the Nelson muffler on . Trimmed the rain skirt , ground the outside exhaust manifold threaded bosses down. Got the muffler on but it wouldn't go down far enough for the bolt holes to line up . Had to grind a little notch in the inside of the muffler O.D. where the inside manifold boss was hitting . Happy to say it sounds better than the Stanley . Thanks
