I had a thought before I rolled out of bed this morning at 5am. Why did AGCO make such a deal out of Gleaner's 85th anniversary? Wouldn't most manufacturers do the 75th or wait til the 100th? Could it be there won't be a 100th or even 90th?
What do you guys think? Edited by Jordan(OH) - 04 Dec 2009 at 7:35pm |

I have heard that the future of Gleaner is good for now with many new improvements yet to come. We got an 08 R75 this year and love all the improvements over the R62 we had before. I will continue to support the Gleaner line and stay off the green bandwagon.

I'm not a big farmer, only a "hobby farmer" since recent times. I have loved silver combines since I first learned on a Gleaner E. I hope with the new improvments to the R series Gleaner can stay alive!!! Some people OVERLOOK PERFORMANCE to keep their favorite color in the shed. I hope Gleaner makes a come back!!! Ryan

I have a bad feeling that the Gleaner combine will be joining its good buddy the AGCO orange tractor is the discontinued line of AGCO in the next five years or so. If AGCO can pull this stunt off with the orange tractor, I see no reason why they would continue three combine lines also, especially since they want to force Massey and Challenger down your throat, we can't have a better seller, Gleaner in the way of that. You can make the agurement that Gleaner has the best sales, but AGCO has already proven that doesn't matter by discontinuing the best selling high horsepower tractor they have and the only reason they could come up with for doing that was because of the Teir 4 testing requirements. If that was the case, dump the lowest seller, Challenger not your best, AGCO.

I have to think the future looks bleak for a shortline combine. 300,000 greenbacks for a machine that might not have a dealer? I don't think so. Not me, anyway. Richenhagen is an idiot. We can't trust his judgement, he will probably try to cram the Laverda machine down our throats next. It seems to me the adoptive family is taking the name of the step child here. Nothing against step children, but what other company would forget their own history and try to adopt someone else's?
Wouldn't it have made great sense to include the Agcostar tractor in the Agco Allis line, rather than having it all on it's own? Offering a full equipment line from Agco Allis would have been a wise move. Instead, they made up a new name and paint scheme, called it Challenger, and undermined their loyal dealers that had already paid their dues, and been through some very tough times. If you were going to pick up a four wheel drive tractor line, wouldn't it have been just as easy to pick Buhler versatile or jump on the New Holland bandwagon? To Richenhagen's credit, that wasn't his doing, mainly because he was probably busy selling floor tiles then. But somebody there sure made the wrong choice on that one. I looked at the Agcostar, but bought a New Holland Versatile in 2000, because I had a dealer nearby. The Agcostar in orange paint would have been a strong contender if my Agco Allis dealer would have automatically been a dealer. It is the dealer network that makes a company successful. They need to be treated with respect.

Redline, I have to believe there was some kind of under the table deal with Cat. "OK, we'll sell you the Challanger brand if you let our dealers sell a full line of wheel tractors, oh and we want exclusive dealer areas."
Cat hasn't made money in the ag business since the early '50's. They have a different mindset then the farm sector. |

They said the future of orange was good a couple months ago, I would not put much faith in what AGCO says. |

I think eventually they get rid of the trans cause it can't get any bigger. Once that happens Gleaner goes to yellow and red if AGCO is still around.
Speaking of challenger. According to my brother. The manager of he Deere dealer went to school with the district sales manager for Challenger. He apparently told him that you have to fight so hard on price to get someone to even look at a Challenger. Then you want to back it up with good dealer support and that is not there. The Cat dealers just don't care to support the Challenger line. Anyway, it's he said, he said he said but it sounds like what everyone else has been saying. I just shake my head. |

Be careful what you include in the "Challenger" name. The "Challenger" COMBINE (a yeller MF) is selling very poorly, mainly because compared to a Lexion(Claas) it is kind of a second rate unit with a high price. Cat dealers mostly prefer the Lexion combine and don't want to support the Challenger combine at all. Tractor sales??? the "Challenger" track tractors far and away outsell the "Challenger" wheel tractors (which are MF with yeller paint) and that's a fact. For those of you referring to a secret deal between Cat and AGCO....AGCO BOUGHT THE CHALLENGER NAME!!!!! and it's track tractors from Caterpillar years ago!!....no secret....just people who don't understand what happened. AGCO originally tried to get Cat to allow them(AGCO) to sell the FENDT line thru Cat dealers (to compliment the tracked Challengers) because the existing AGCO dealer network wasn't getting the job done, and the next thing you know, AGCO bought the Challenger tractos and it's name from Cat instead!!! To repeat, AGCO owns the "Challenger" name and it's tracked tractors and sells them thru the Cat dealer network and doesn't really push the Challenger combine...

You can say that again. The cat dealer near me doesn't give two hangs about ag. I guess there's not as large of profit margins in it, and, for the time being, its a more competitive market, with people who buy based on brand loyalty more often than you see in construction equipment sales. That being said, Cat's starting to fall wayside to some of the foreign construction companies. They can't match their prices, and a lot of the time, the quality. I have a friend whose father has been a cat salesmen for a while, and he's struggling with new sales. If AGCO goes down, that just means someone can come along and buy up the Allis name, logo, and patents for a lot less money than they're worth now :). Group buy? Hurst |

Hurst, Agco doesn't own the Allis Chalmers name. Allis Chalmers owns it. It is a separate company.

Do you mean Allis Chalmers Energy? Doesn't AGCO own the Allis patents for ag stuff?

I don't believe they do. I was working on a location with Allis Chalmers Energy a couple years ago. They still have the AC logo on their trucks.

Agco owns the rights to the AC parts but AC Energy owns the name. They were the last division left standing ( I think ) and I guess they inherited the name. Briggs and Stratton or whoever made the new AC lawnmower would have had to purchase the right to use the name and Agco would have to also. I personally think it would have been a wise move to have started the AC name back up when Agco started up. AC hadn't been gone long then. But that is just wishful thinking I guess. If I knew how to run a big company I don't guess I would be working in a machine now. JP

It is a fact that the Allis Chalmers name has been gone a long time now from ag. Almost 25 years. Around when some of todays decision makers were still in diapers.
