My just-acquired Simplicity has a tab broken off the regulator.  Part number is 122193 and shows to be discontinued.  What's a good source for a replacement?

That cross-reference looks to be a boat impeller, not a voltage regulator.  $249 for a regulator would be a little spendy.

I have not bought one lately but from what I have heard the original rectangular 3 coil regulators are no longer made for this application. The 2 coil square style units are pretty easy to find on eBay. The Briggs and Stratton part number is 295924 but its widely available in aftermarket. It mounts a little differently so I always tried to seek out NOS or good used original type regulators.
