 Topic: HD 6 PULLING/44 SCRAPER

Thought we should post up some action shots of an HD6E pulling a Laplante Choate/Allis Chalmers scraper. This is cleaning the sediment out of a stock water/irrigation lake that our father built over 50 years ago (with some AC tractors). Now it's more often referred to "THE ALLIS CHALMERS PLAYGROUND" The model #44 scraper was the largest hydraulically operated pull scraper in the AC fleet.

With those teeth marks in the bank must have been a loader in there also OR someone has a excavator that is not in the picture . Seems the self loading units are now the thing or a excavator and a haul truck to do a quick job. Times change and so does the equipment but it still can be done with the older things and sometimes it's more fun also.

Those are great pics; thanks for sharing. See its got the factory rear hydraulic control for the scoop too. And no front hydraulics, did you buy this as a 'ag' tractor. Tractors and scoops are the most underated tool when it come to moving dirt; almost old forgotten technology. But in cases like that when you can get on top of it, you have every other machine combination beat. One man can load, carry, run with it, dump, spread, grade and roll. all other combinations need min of 2 and usually 3 or 4 to do it. Cost per cubic yard tractor and scoop wins everytime. Exceptions of course are you have to be able to get on top of and behind it, and how far you have to move it. common rule of thumb for scoop combos was 1200ft. but obviously this is easier with a HD16 than a HD6. But one things for sure. Tractors and scoops are the 'funnest way to move dirt' Lots of people in nz had AC 44s, Cat 40s and AC dealer here even made a small 6 yd scoop here under licence from sterling/blaw knox for HD6s when they couldn,t get any more 44s. And is still a lot of these combos still in use here. Seen a few D4Hs towing cat 40s

Coke, yes your right we have a Cat 312 excavator that we had to start with. We had to dig to the bottom to get it drained enough to dry out to get anything on top of it. Merv, the rear hydraulic unit is a Bee Gee unit made here in California. A very common unit found on most ag tractors, 1 or 2 spools. They were used on all different makes AC,CAT,IH. This HD6E was an Ag tractor that came with that unit. We have the hardnose and blade from a donor tractor to put on it too we just started with the canopy to get out of the sun first. (work in progress) The travel distance in this case was appox 500'. We also have some pictures of an HD15 with a cable "scoop" on this project that I will post as soon as I figure out how to get more photo space here. My file manager is almost full and I don't want to delete anything?

Thanks Mel. AC did sell a factory hyd control identical to that specifically for controlling the 44 scraper, maybe bee gee made them for AC ? Had heard of people on the cat forum talking about beegee pump setups, so now I can put a pic to the name !
You could get a diverter valve on the front HD6 hyd control to send oil to a rear double bank hyd valve. This is what the dealer here did to the HD6s they sold with my model of scoop.

The tractor and scoop combos are still quite popular in some areas. Roly Billings in the UK has a lot of D8Ks and Hs towing hydraulic cat 463 scrapers and he posts a lot of his videos on youtube. And McAninch in the usa uses D11Rs towing converted cat 651 scraper bowls to really move dirt
