Guys: Came across an 816 Allis Chalmers Industrial Loader Backhoe - very straight.
Can you give me your comments on these machines. Good or Bad. Any interchangeability with the 700 series LBH machines. Machine is exceptionally tight with a good clean cab. Thanks in advance for any comments. Orangeman

It sounds like you are onto a good one, if the price is good I'd go for it. I first bought one in 1980 with lots of hours, but a very good and dependable machine. I have another 816 right now, this one has numerous oil leaks but still very useful. I really wish for directional brakes which would make many situations easier to handle. This can be modified with some plumbing and patience. The power train is very good, Perkins engine, Borg Warner fwd reverser and a Rockwell rear end, Commercial Shearing Hyd. pump. No big mysteries for parts. Would be interesting to know the asking price.

Dave and Eric: No not in my yard yet, and wish I did have pictures. Had a four hour drive for 1 hours worth of field engineering work, then back home. I looked the machine over several years ago and it was very nice externally. Odd ball part of it is it sits in the exact same spot it did several years ago, at this point I can see some oxidation up my the front cowl. So am considering making an offer.
Eric - I was hoping to hear that parts availability for the machine is good based on componitized parts. Who has ownership of Perkins at this point? I should be up where the machine reside in about two months so will try to get some pics at that point. Did the 816 come with an extendahoe feature?

Most of the parts for that machine as well as other TLB built by AC can be found in open market as well as MINPAR may still have source.
AC bought the extenda-hoe from other suppliers , so like my 715B it was a option not a AC part. Most hyd parts can also be sourced through outside vendors as is common in industry. Engine wise there are a lot of suppliers out there for the Perkins engine parts, lot of them in many different mfg machines.

Gentlemen: thank -you for all the pearls of wisdom and comments, sure appreciate them. I am thinking the machine will go for between $4-5000. Wish me luck!
