Hello all, I am the proud owner of an orange project. Thanks to Dave Kamp and Tim Brannons patience, the seriously ill D17D series IV is now in my barn. It had sat long enough to get the motor both partially filled with water and stuck. Oil is drained (about 3 gal), injectors were removed, ATF/ Acetone was poured in via the 'funnel' and using a pry bar now has the motor turning over. What I cannot get is the starter to turn with the key switch. All I get is the solenoid to fire. (well, one of them) I am about to check with an ohmmeter and see just WHICH solenoid is tripping with the key switch. Last night I 'thought' that the culprit was the solenoid having bad contacts, so I changed it. Same result. SO, all that being said, I need a schematic for the tractor, so I can accurately troubleshoot the electrics. What I am not sure of is what does the push-button get used for? Is it for the air intake grid? Is there some safety circuit that prevents the solenoid from firing with the key?

the "starter switch" , when turned on pos. CW, only provides current to the button starter switch to the right; which is what is wired into the starter solenoid.
The click you are hearing is the heater-element solenoid; as long as you hold the key in the 2nd CW position, the intake heater (right below the intake manifold) will be on. As long as the heater is in good shape and not burned out, it should get very hot. NEVER use the heater and ether at the same time. I recommend not using ether at all.
Although the wire gages aren't listed, this is the diagram for a D17sIV Diesel

Gatz,,
Thank you for the reply. The scuzzy-matic answers many questions. Now I also see why my two 12V batteries do not fit in the tray. I also see why the old 12V batteries seemed so, small. Super Dave had already surmised (correctly so) that the tractor probably had been outfitted with two 6's in series. That also explains why the 'extra' grounding wire doesn't really look factory. (mine is tied to the upper corner of the battery box/ upper frame ) I will now move onto the next question that I need to get info on. If I cannot find the answer, I will have to start another topic. Thank you again. |
