No-one ever did say that the adventure would be a bed of roses all the time!!!
On the 11th of November my white cell count was over 600,000 (a normal persons white cell count would be in a range of, low..4,000 to top..11,000) so mine at (600,000) was just about topped out. Went to the Dr. and told him I was in trouble...Tony & I went in his office and he closed the door and gave me the "talk" (advised to DNR) which scared us both very much!! And then checked me into the hospital for 7 days of treatment...but this time the treatment seems to be working...I went home for 2 weeks (when we had our mini vacation...that vacation was just as much for Tony as for me!! It can be just as hard (or harder) on the caregiver as the person who is ill!!) This time my white cell count was dropping without me being hooked to a chemo bag or getting an injection....Tony & I were both numb because that hadn`t happened before and was to us a very good sign. Went again to the hospital on Dec 2nd and got to come home on Sunday the 6th. THIS time the white cell count has gone below the "normal" so I finally have some breathing room... Sitting in a hospital bed gives a person lots of time to reflect and focus on what is most important in life....when this started in early August...I was being a smart A%% and said that I was waiting for the time when I WANTED to have a big juicy hamburger and a beer at our favorite spot. That doesn`t even come into the picture anymore...my priorities have turned around about 360 degrees. While in the hospital I had a visit from Pastor Paul from St Marks Lutheran.. he gave me communion...which was very important to me (Tony is Catholic and me being Lutheran I wasn`t able to have communion since I wasn`t Catholic and hadn`t done confession) I told Pastor Paul the other day that one of my main goals is to be well enough (I have absolutely no immunity right now and so catching a cold or flu or anything would not be good!!) to be able to attend St. Marks and have communion with the congregation. That and to survive this cancer to tip the scales to 49-51 (instead of 50-50) AND...to be here for another 2, 5, 10, 20 years (Tony needs me as much as I need him!!) Lastly...my cousin came out Thanksgiving morning to give me a "short" haircut...which was something I wanted and needed...the following Sunday my hair started falling out by the handfulls!! BUT...I have lots of hats!! Sorry this is soooo long...but it just about covers everything!! Hope everyone has a Very Merry Christmas...and please remember the reason we celebrate!! Barb |

Barb, truly wish I had some profound words to help. I was afraid the mini vacation was not optional, and honestly worried. It's good to evaluate life goals. Sounds like you have adjusted them and I expect you will meet them with tenacity.

Yo Barb
I got a friend in town that was heading down hil lfast. His wife had a conversation with some Dr. in Boston and he recommended a different drug. It seemed that the local doctor administered it as a sort of an appeaser deal.
Well the last time we saw Leon he had a great big a%%ed smile on his face and said that it looked like he would be around to pester us for two years.
I don't know what your diagnosis is but I could get a rough one on his nd also pass along the name of the drug.
Just a thought.
Hang in there girl!

Barb,
Deb and I continue to think of you and pray for you. I, like JimD was concerned about the "vacation".
I pray that you continue to progress and you and Tony have many more years together.
God Bless

Barb, great to hear you're doing well with this. I have a SIL that was diagnosed 6 years ago with the same thing you have(CML?). She has good days and bad, but hopes that she will be able to see her 13 year old graduate. It seems that this is like a lot of things. The earlier they find it, the better your chances. My brother was only 32 when they diagnosed him. His count was over 500,000 and spleen had swelled over 4 times normal size. Apparently, he had had this for some time, but it was never detected. Sadly, he is no longer with us. He only lasted 3 days after diagnosis. Hope this does'nt discourage you, as you seem to be doing quite well. You have been in my prayers since I found out about what you had going on. Stay strong and keep in touch with the man upstairs. He can work miracles, you just have to keep faith and keep fighting.
PS, my SIL is taking Gleevik, which seems to be what has kept her here this long. Do you know anything about this drug? She says the side-effects are pretty bad, but it's better than the alternative. Keep us posted. Merry Christmas and God bless. Dream.

Keep up the postive thinking and prayers and believe and you could live to be 100. I had a neighbor to take all of the chemo and radiation at the National Cancer institute in Zion Il. ,they sent him home with 60 - 90 days to live and he made it 6 more YEARS. Will say a prayer for you and Tony. You sound like you are living for the Lord and if that is the case you can't go wrong. Morris |

Great to hear from you, Barb. I was talking with Tony the other day and heard about your latest chapter in the adventure. Know that your many, many friends out here are praying for you - you're on "the list" at our church - and are always interested in how you are doing. We'll keep praying for more progress and a happy end to the adventure. BTW, I doubt God would be offended if you munched down a cheeseburger! He might even consider it an appropriate celebration of your progress, both against the illness and in your faith journey. God bless. Dave
