I have to rework the brakes on my 49 B with foot brakes. The Service Manual shows taking the band out through the hole under the seat angle. Is this do-able and the best way? What about getting the new band back in place? Any suggestions from someone who has "been there, done that" is appreciated. Thanks, Stan

The link below has some insight and tips for a model C that also apply to the B. I don't know if you saw it already.

Thanks, I guess I just missed the post about the brakes since it had C in the reference. I usually read most all of them. Stan

Stan, I've done a few brake jobs on a B, C, and CA, but I have to remember that was some 60 or less years ago. All I can suggest is that you clean out the brake area well. Remove the pin then get hold of the nut on the band with vice grips - you know when they cam out I thought I had died and gone to heaven - and work them out. Try not to bend the bands since you can re-line them. Perhaps there is some lining out there yet.
Take good care of my favorate.
Good Luck!
Bill Long
ps: Listen closely to the advice given above - it is good.

take seat frame off. soak the 5/8 pins good with penetrant. use an air powered chilsle gun to punch them out from the center to the outside. helps to have tires off. make sure to washo out first, get rid of all mud and mouse nests. use a #9 wire to pull out and put back in. wrap wire around a 3 ft pry bar for leverage.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

SORRY TO STEAL THE POST...I AM ALSO INTERESTED IN KNOWING WHY I FIND A LISTING IN CATALOGS FOR THE LEFT SIDE DRUM BUT NO RIGHT SIDE AVAILABLE NEW OR REMAN? MY C HAS A ISSUE WITH THE RIGHT SIDE BRAKE AND I WAS GOING TO JUST OVERHAUL ENTIRE BRAKES ON IT BUT CANT GET THE RIGHT SIDE DRUM? SHOULD IT EVEN BE REPLACED OR JUST SHOES AGAIN? IS THIS A COMMON ISSUE THAT ALL B C CA'S HAVE THAT YOU ONLY CAN HAVE BRAKES ON LEFT SIDE?

Both sides are the same. You can remove the right side final drive and put it on the left side. You would have to turn the brake band assembly around but the parts are the same.

Crazy, The CA is the only one that has a different brake drum on the right, since it has the differential clutch built in.

More for Crazy to ponder.
Why do both CA housings have a hole in the top for the clutch lever? I have only heard of 1 or 2 with a hand clutch on the left side. The final drive housings on a CA can't be swaped around like a B or C because of the off set to the rear giving a CA a longer wheelbase than a C. I guess if you could swap them around but you would shorten the wheelbase.
If the hand clutch goes bad on a CA and you don't need it. A left side one piece CA axle and a brake drum off a B or C or a left side off a CA can take its place.

wasn't this for a shorter turning radius on end rows, only having one side due to only turning one direction when properly cultivating....lol. it was probably really due to manufacturing same casings because it would be cheaper...
