I put a ad on Craigslist to sell some fire wood. I got the following email and it's seams kind of odd.
Thanks for the prompt response. I have instructed my
account officer to mail (overnight) a certified check, while you hold this item for me. Let me know when you receive the check and I will have my mover will come pick up at your place. Please forward me the following info so I can issue your check . . . 1.Your full name 2.Your mailing address(Physical as Ups does not deliver to P.O.Box} 3.Your phone number. ** Please note that I will overnight the payment, and you should receive it tomorrow. I appreciate you holding this for me. Please delete the posting as I am definitely buying it from you and it would be sad for me to have the payment in the mail only to be informed of the its sale also am deaf and will like to be contacted via email.* First thing that strikes me as odd is that he doesn't say how many cords that he wants. I doubt that we wants all 10 cords. Second thing is that he wants to pay with a certifed check and have his movers get the wood when i stated in the ad i will deliver. Third thing is The first line in his email is "thanks for the prompt reply" when i haven't sent an email all day. So do you all think that this is a scam? The mans name is henry scott that sent the message. Thanks Matt |

Yes, it is a scam. Over the past few months anytime I list on Craig's List I get email from some one trying to sell me something.

OMG! It's a scam, scam, scam, scam and more scam.
Now repeat after me:
I will not be scammed by a 13 year old Nigerian.
I will not be scammed by a 13 year old Nigerian.
I will not be scammed by a 13 year old Nigerian.
Always assume it's a scam until someone hands you cold hard cash IMHO.

It is obviously a scam. My question is: What are they going to do with that information? That info does not seem as though it would be very useful to a scammer or idenity thief. Is the first message a "lead in" and then they ask you for more info or what? Maybe this person is just a "Rookie" at the scam game. I've received similar messages when posting things on Craigslist.

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

Osage: The scammer will use the information to mail you a check (phony/bad) that exceeds the purchase amount by about $600. He will then tell you to cash (or deposit) the check as it is too much trouble to have a new check issued. You will then be offered to keep $300 above your asking price for your trouble and to give the other $300 to his transportation people when they arrive (different scammer in on the scam). They will drive off with your merchandise and $300 and in a few days your bank will contact you and tell you that you owe them for the amount of the check as it was phony/bad and you presented it to them. It is a very common scam. That is why it is posted almost EVERY time someone posts a new ad on Craigslist. When you consider how many hundreds of thousands of new posts there are a day--it only takes one half of one percent to be successful.
