My dad has a story about our D17. We were chopping corn for some cousins with our D17, New holland 717 chopper, and one row head. They did not have a chopper at the time. They had some low ground near a creek so the corn was 10 feet high, working the hell out of the D17. One of my uncles had it in 1st gear riding the hand clutch, to not choke the tractor. Our cousins are die hard red, they had a 460 at the time that was their big tractor. They said "get that little tractor off that chopper and put a real tractor on there!!!" so they did. They put the 460 on the chopper, the 460 had to run 1st gear riding the foot clutch, the whole time. One load is all they could do, the clutch was red hot and smoking, almost on fire! Needless to say they put the D17 back on and finished the field. We never got crap about having an allis again! Its just an old story my dad tells. Makes me laugh!

A friend of mine who is now 84 years old, had a new D17 in 1960 and his neighbor also had a new IH460 at the same time. They were filling silo at the neighbors and the customary practice was the silo owner used his tractor on the blower. My friend was getting teased as they were unloading about the "small" stature of his D17 parked alongside the big IH460. My friend said " why don't you let me put my little tractor on the blower for a couple loads and let's see how small it is"..............they never put the 460 back on the blower. Nuff said.

My Dad tells a similar story of when they were filling silo. Grandpa would always chop with the D-14, and the neighbor had his A JD on the blower. At that time they had the false end gate type wagons with the electric jack. When the A was on the blower they would have to unplug the jack quite often to keep from plugging. One day when finishing the silo they put the D-14 on the blower and never unplugged that jack. And now you know the rest of the story. Ha Another I heard also had to do with filling silo. It was real tall silo and they had an F-20 on the blower I believe. The F-20 couldn't cut it, so one of the neighbors said he would bring over his WC and they all laughed. Every year after that, the WC was put on the blower to fill that taller silo.

friend of mine bought a old wd45d one time that needed a motor. He put a 262 gas in it out of a combine. he was helping a local church move some durt with a pull type tumble bug when a diehard JD man thought his JD could do it better not realizing what was under the hood. he had to go and get the deere to show him up. After about 30 minits the deere was hot. so they didn't use it again.

An old neighbor of ours once told me how when he worked for another farmer just down the road they had a 70 Deere on the blower but it just couldn't quite throw the silage high enough for his silo so this guy brought his WC over and it did just fine and until he bought a D15 it was the blower tractor. The 70 would just lug down too slow.

These stories have made my day. Good Allis stories, I would like to hear some about plowing all so, not just pto work. Not that I do not believe them, because I do, but I would just like to say stories make me think of this. There are three sides to a story . Your side, His side, And the truth. But when telling the truth in a story you will have to sides, your side and the truth. Good Day.

One of my favorate stories had to do with a silo filler also. There was a farm where people were demonstraing their tractors. It seemed that no one could power the silo filler. Before I left that night I measured the pulley on the silo filler. Found out that the pulley sizes were not giving the blower enough rpm's to load the silo. Put the right pulley on a "flat top" WC. Took it to the demonstration and needless to say it worked.
Love those stories.
Also, there was a WD plowing when a 300 Farmall pulled in also. We let the Farmall go first. We would "bump" the 300 once in a while to let it know we were there.
Fun times.
Just remember don't pull drawbar to drawbar with a case-o-matic tractor. The fluid clutch will stall any tractor in third gear since you cannot slip the clutch enough to compensate.
Good Luck!

My Grandpa used to tell of an AC dealer demo with a WC and an F-20. He laid out a line of corn cobs along a line for both tractors to run over, put them in gear and throttled each down as low as they would run. Each time the WC hit a cob the governor would open a bit and keep it going. The F-20 stalled on the first cob. This Grandpa was an IH man and other than having an AC - C many years ago never left IH.

One time Dad had a D17 on demo and was plowing in the field east of the house. My second cousin came over (riding bikes on Sunday afternoon) for a visit and asked how many bottoms was that little tractor was pulling? I said 4, not much said after that (he was an Oliver man).

All the comments about running a silo filler reminded me of the guy who did a lot of custom silo filling in our area. As was the custom, the silo owner provided the power to the silo filler--------as long as it wasn't a 2 cylinder Deere. He claimed they tore up the u-joints on the PTO drive.

During WW2, my uncle Keith was a machine gunner on a bommer flying over germany. He was lucky and got all his flights in and was shipped home in 1943. He went to the IHC dealer and ordered an new H tractor with a mounted picker. He finally recieved them after WW2 was over. In 1955 he bought a holdover super M and dad bought a new WD45. Grandpa got sick that fall, dad, uncle Don and uncle Kieth got together to pick his corn. Uncle Kieth was running the H with the picker, uncle Don was running the super M hauling corn, dad was doing the same with the WD45. I went along to kick the corn away from the elevator. They had to haul this corn about 3 miles ouer some real steep hills. The back of the wagon being pulled by the super M had bright orange paint along it, where dad pushed him up every hill. I heard uncle Don ask grandpa "what the hell has that dam Chalmers got under the hood, I cant get away from him. The dam thing pushes me up every hill and will run just as fast as this M going down hill"

back in the late fifties grandad pulled a one row papec chooper behind a wd45, and kept a chain on the back of the chopper to help pull the m up the hills with the loaded wagons when they would not make it up the steep parts

I'll bet the M had a narrow front and the WD45 a wide front. Not many of the M's had a wide front due to the poor turning angle of the IH wide front while the Allis wide front turned quite short. |

In 1970 we replaced a neighbours MF 1100 running a saw mill off the pto with our 180. The AC 180 preformed much better keeping the engine rpms around 2000 or faster which was better than the MF 1100 did.

in the mid 60s neighbor was very sick, and all the neighbors came in to plow his fields. jD 60s model As, MF 65, IH super M MTA and a 560 SEMI MT4-14. AC WD45 and Dads D17 diesel with a 4 btm slat bottom fully mtd . They were fueling up at the end of the day and the 560 owner was giving Dad a hard time and said You didnt do to bad for a 4-14 plow. His face really dropped when he found out Dad was pulling 4-16.
