OK i am having the generator checked today and new wires made to go from generator to the regulator. Here is my question The wireing diagram shows a positive ground.. but the guy who had the D17 Series IV before me just hooked it up as negative ground.. So it this and issue or is it ok. When I poloize the the system will that work. Or does it need to be postive ground?

All of A-C's generator systems were originally positive ground. When you put it all back together, polarize the system. Polarizing is in simple terms telling the generator which pole is "hot" and "ground".
It will work either way. I've heard that the regulator will not work so well if it was originally pos ground and you switch it to neg ground. My experience has been it makes no difference.

OK thanks I wondered if the polorizing would take care of the issue. I am having it all checked out since it seams to not be charging the battery. Even after been running for a long time it has to be jumped. The battery tests good. Someone said you can not use a 12V battery. But the guys at the electrical shop did not say anything and they deal with tons of old tractors and restore them selves.

I think all series IV D17's were 12 volt.

Some magnetic regulators were a little polarity sensitive from the choice of contact materials. Different materials for the points on the vibrating regulator unit cut cost but cut life with reversed polarity. Otherwise that type of regulator wasn't polarity sensitive.

Just an update, I put new generator in and new regulater on last week. Went and put it back to positive ground and replorized everything. It was much simpler then I though and she is running well... Next up// a new manifold
