Just did a bunch of work on my 53 wd so it has been sitting awhile (3-4 months) in the barn. rebuilt the carb, new manifold, rebuilt generator to 12 volt, anyway started it up today and the governor is acting up. I only have idle and full trottle on the lever. In between just stays at what it was last at. I know nothing about governors. The throttle linkage was moved from the carb side while removing and installing the carb, could I have broke something inside the governor? Also noticed at start up that the head gasket is seeping oil but no antifreeze in the oil, is this normal or now do I need to replace the head gasket. what is the best way to fix governor and are parts out there for it. I have a mag on it now but have a distributer that I am getting ready to install from later wd. help?

Don't know about the gov but I doubt you harmed anything in there while fiddling with the carb linkage.I suggest tightening the head bolts for the "leak".You'll likely have to remove the rocker shaft to get on some bolts but simple enough. You need to readjust valve lash anyway after retorque.Old AC book says 65 ft/lb.

You said rebuilt the carb?? then I'm going to guess either the gov linkage isn't adjsuted properly OR the seal on the carb throttle shaft is too tight and binding, causing high effort to move the carb throttle shaft lever.

what is the proper way to adjust the linkage? I did install a new manifold which is not exactly the same as the stock one that was on it so Im sure the carb moved some. I will check for the binding. I did notice while putting it back together that the linkage was very hard to move. I never remembered it being that way before?

Carb/governor linkage has to be very free....figure out what your binding is. The cotter pin goes towards the water pump on the link rod at the governor arm....some people install it backwards and then it causes trouble on the carb end.

I am betting on the carburetor throttle shaft seal being too tight as Dr. suggested. We can provide gov parts if needed. Bill
