Can someone explain to me how the hydraulics still work on a D17 series 4 when the clutch is pushed in. I know things were designed different for this, but I don't have a manual that shows a breakdown of it. Got my loader on this past weekend and got a chance to tinker and drive around last night and thought it was awesome that I could still move the loader and disengage the clutch. |

On SerIV models the hydraulic pump driven by a hollow drive shaft which is splined into the clutch cover. The bevel gear on the rear end of the hollow drive shaft drives the hydraulic pump all the time the engine is running.
Looked it up in the manual word for word.I never realized how it worked until just now. |

Chuck - a hollow quill shaft is driven directly off the flywheel. Inside the torque tube it's taken off there at the belt pulley location using bevel gears to constantly drive the hydraulic pump as long as the engine is turning. The regular shaft attached to the clutch turns inside this hollow quill shaft. Mike

Chuck, The series 4 have a different pressure plate on the clutch assembly. It drives an outer shaft that drives the pump mounted on the side of the tractor all the time. I just wish Allis had put a dual clutch in those tractors for live pto, and still keep the PD. We have a D17 with a Henry loader with a front mount pump. Of all the tractors we have had over the years, this loader has more lifting capacity than them all. That is likely why it came with the original front end in pieces.

Thanks guys. That explains it. Now I just need to get some bigger meats on the front to handle the loader better and it will be guaranteed to not snow the rest of the winter here in Wisconsin!!
