Help!! Loader on wd45 is not lifting

Please help....This morning when I was plowing snow my loader got over heated??? and now my hydro loader on the Allis Chalmers not working.  Could it be the hydro pump that went out??  I am new to this Allis Chalmers tractor so any info is greatly appreciated.

Better check the fluid level. I think it takes less than a quart to raise the loader up. The dipstick is on the left side of the frame up near the clutch pedal. It is supposed to rad to the full make with the lift arms UP and the loader down.

No way to over heat or overwork it.Check fliud first then look for slipped/missing linkage.

Why do you say it over heated? Could you smell hot oil or did you see any smoke or steam coming from the pump? If so then yes it over heated. If the oil level is fine then a spool stuck in the pump. Usually caused by a broken spring that has gotten wedged somewhere in one of the spools or valves. If so then you need to remove the pump and on a very clean large surface, take it apart and lay the parts out in the order they came out. Everything has to go back together into the exact same spot they came out as each spool, valve etc is fitted to each bore. Check for scoring and bad check valves, rollers and so forth. Replace all springs. First, above all things, get a regular Allis Chalmers service manual. It will guide you step by step. Then check all your linkage as per manual. Hopefully you just have low oil but it's not that bad of a job once you've done it.

I've seen them lock up from running out of oil but that usually happens to those tractors that don't have the hydraulics used much and the low oil goes unnoticed until the pump is ruined. So always check the oil even when not using the hydraulics. Many don't.

the hydralic pump on the 45 at my son in laws got hot last winter, you could tell by the melting, steaming snow on top of the pump, had plenty of oil in it.  I took the pump off and just like Lonn says had some broken check valve spings.  cleaned it all up, put it back together, works great now.   I replaced all the check valve springs and orings, those pumps are pretty robust if you dont run them out of oil.

ok...i checked the fluid and it was low..i added more today and it still not lifting. i do hear the pump, possibly whining--if that's appropriate term. also, i forgot to say that before the loader not working the motor revved higher than usual..i didn't smell any burned fluid or saw any smoke...it just all the sudden stopped working.
as far as taking out the pump, i'll have to find the manual because i'm just a rookie on the allis chalmers.

Listen closely to what is said above.  It is all vital and correct. 
When we worked on them we were told to immerse the parts in diesel oil so they did not expand.
You know, I am amazed that the WD, WD-45, and CA pumps still work.  They have such close tolerances and are up to 60 years plus old. 
Goes to show "they make them good at Allis Chalmers"

Was that to keep the parts cool? I had a pan of diesel that I put the parts in after I cleaned them with brake cleaner before assembly. I did that just to keep the parts clean. The 4 years I was at the AC shop I never got to work on one of these pumps so when I tackled mine I had no over site but I guess I was a mechanic long enough to not be scared to tear into it. I did hear from a non AC mechanic who thought those pumps were complicated enough that he just sent the pump to an AC shop.

This may be a dumb question, but did you check the linkage from the steering wheel all the way down to the pump to make sure everything is connected?   Just trying to eliminate all other potential problems.

cuhck..no questions is dumb..it's the obvious that often over lokked...but in my case...i have no idea what i'm even looking at..just picked up the AC a few days ago and everything seemed to be working fine. i mean the guy who i bought it from and i played with it for awhile before i brought it home.

Not sure what the whining would be. Could be that a spool is stuck in a spot to let oil just by and cause a whine. I have a 45 that squeals when I run it. Bought it fairly reasonable and haven't had time to look in to it but I think mine was run out of oil and ruined the pump. The guy I bought it from never used the hydraulics and there wasn't any oil in it when I bought it.

Anyway, I still lean towards a broken spring or something like that stuck in a spool.

If the tractor is new to you and you haven't drained and replaced the fluids, you could have ice blocking the pump pick-up. Since it did work and stopped working all at once, had it been warm enough not to freeze and then taken out in the cold?  Check to make sure the linkage is working as Chuck mentioned. There are also adjustments that can get out of wack in the linkage. Lonn..thank you for your thoughts..i will have to find my manual and see if i could tackle doing the pump.  and where would i find the rings/valve or things to repair&replace the pump?

i did take it out on a cold day..it has been sitting since i last used it a few days ago, but that was before the cold temp came thru. and no i didn't think about flusing and re-filling w/ new fluid. but i'll have to check the linkage too.  i  already have a manual but will support the host of this forum in near future.

Those pumps have 4 rollers that run on a camshaft and push plungers with a lever.With the engine off,check the oil level again.Pull out dipstick,wipe off and re-stick it.Mine never reads the same(always lower) on the second measurement.If run too low for extended period,you will ruin rollers and likley cam because they run in the oil.It doesn't sound like you have had too low of an oil situation long enough to hurt. There is linkage from the control lever shaft down to the hold valve on top of the pump.From there,there is a small(1/4in) adjustable rod that goes on down to the lever sticking out of the control section of the pump.They all move together when you work the lever up at the steering wheel. Check to see it's all there and moving.

There are no rings or valves in these pumps. O-rings on some parts and small ball bearings for check valves. Probably the most broken part in the pump are the springs. When my pump quit several years ago it was the unloader valve. A shoulder broke off allowing it to "dump" all the time.
