I'm trying to install a rebuilt D15 starter. It appears the new starter drive is extended out but will not retract. For some reason the starter drive does not want to retract and prevents the starer from sliding all the way into the tractor housing. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'll add my thoughts; Have/did you compare the original starter to the rebuilt unit? Were they exactly the same? Bench test the starter for proper operation, just maybe the drive is NG.

Some people don't realize there are starter drives that are backwards. The gear is away from the motor and advances toward the motor when you hit the juice. My G is that way.
Try putting juice to the starter and see if the drive advances backward. |

I had the starter rebuilt at one of our local tractor repair centers that we have used for years. The new parts look exactly like all of the new parts I have researched on the web for this particular model. Just thought I might be overlooking something on the installation. I did bench test it and it is getting power the starter drive just doesn't seem to retract it always remains extented.

The starter on my D14 only "disengages" when the engine fires up and goes faster than the starter. Had a problem with it and needed to replace the insulating bushing on the bat lead...and running the starter drive on the wire brush on my grinder to disengage it before installing it again. Really frustrating until I got it figured out, but running the starter drive on the wire wheel really did the trick. |
