 Topic: Muratic acid for cleaning rusty gas tank,,?

I have a gas tank that has some good amount of rust all over inside of the tank. Can Muratic acid be safely used to remove the rust without eating the tank plumb up? Tank currently has no leaks,,, Something else perhaps,,,??

That's what I used before using POR to seal the metal inside. No leaks so far and no rust on inside. The POR when dries is hard as a rock, be careful on the drips if you use it. I cleaned the filter bowl port/threads with a tap, it was hard.

hmm, wonder if screwing in a PLASTIC pipe 3/8" pipe fitting into the outlet would be a good idea ?

Joe, mount it on a motor that'll turn it at rotisserie speed. Toss in a soup-can full of old nuts, bolts, nails and screws, and let it roll them a while, then change the angle a dozen times... it'll scrub all the rust out... then vacuum out all the loose rust, give it a slosh-around rinse with a cup of gasoline, let it dry for about 10 minutes, then spray the inside with fogging oil 'till you're ready to mount it.

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

Joe I tried every trick known to man to clean the tank on my WC.
Last resort was Muratic acid.
It worked wonders. I didn’t leave it in long.
I had three boxes of baking soda at the ready. I mixed the first box in a gallon of water. Soon as I drained the Muratic acid I poured in the gallon of water/ baking soda and sloshed it around. I did this 3 times and then a good rinse.
Did it on a hot sunny day.
The tank looked like new in side.
I now have an old cement mixer that I strap tanks to. I pour in some roofing nails and dog chain.
Let it spin then turn it and let it spin and turn it and let it spin.

OK, Many Thanks for the suggestions,,Guys,,!! I failed to mention the size of the tank,,at 12 gallons. SO,,at that rate,,,how much Muratic acid should I start out with in the tank? I do have my cement mixer that runs at a very low speed. How much Baking Soda/Water mix should I have ready to neutralize the acid? I'ma gonna go ahead and make a plate to seal the gauge opening. I also looked into using a Boat type plastic tank,,but I could not find one with a "Fill Spout" in the correct location on the tank and also in the frame,,,,,

i use muratic acid for cleaning tanks alot if it makes a leak then it is on its ways anyday and better to find out now

Joe I did a 10 gallon tank. 1 gallon muriatic acid and one gallon of water. I’d slosh it around every so often. I only let it soak about 30 minutes. I drained it and flushed with one gallon of water and one box of baking soda. I did the neutralizer 3 times then a good rinse. When it was dry I poured in some gas and sloshed it around. It was shiny inside

When de-rusting and prepping metal I use to use a 5 to 1 ratio of water to acid
The problem is it will FLASH Rust if not dried quickly -

Muriatic acid can work to remove rust, but it’s very aggressive and could damage the tank if not used carefully. A safer option might be using a commercial rust remover designed for fuel tanks, like Evapo-Rust or a similar product. Always follow safety precautions and neutralize the acid afterward.
