I'm considering purchase of a tractor for use on food plots on my own land, as well as general work around the property.  

From My research, here is what I think I know. 

1956 Allis Chalmers WD45.  Serial Number WD228812   Wide Front End, 4 cylinder gas.  Koyker Super Loader with Hydraulic Dump.  3 point Brush Hog, 4 point blade.   It sounds like it wants to start, but is struggling to turn over completely.   The air cleaner assembly is rusted through near the top, but still holds on.  There is a hydraulic line in the rear that looks rusted and seized up, but unsure.  

Because I haven't gotten it started, I don't know if anything else functions, but I am told it does.   

I have pictures, and will try to upload if I can figure out this forum.  

Thanks for any advice.  
Most of the hydraulic lines look good.  Some will need replaced but not immediately from the looks of it.  

Gas smells fine, unsure on other fluids at this time. 

I am confident I can get it running, but give me your expert feedback on how much of a pian replacing the air cleaner assembly will be.  Also, thoughts on what this is work the way it sits right now.   Cash, and I would haul it away.

First, welcome to the best AC forum on the web! We're a giant Orange family here and always helping one another out no matter what the subject or fix! Tough one to call on the cost factor of the Tractor. Parts are readily available for the 45' so you shouldn't have any trouble finding an air cleaner assy. The main thing is getting it started and see how it runs. Of coarse, a loader is a plus, especially one that is hydraulic over a trip loader. Tractors range in all different prices depending on your location. The ole saying location, location, location. Looks like some nice accessories comes with that Tractor as well. The main thing as you know is get it running and go from there.  Good Luck! The WD45 wide front Tractor is a nice Tractor and very versitile...

The tractor runs!! The loader works, although I’ll need to add a collar so the hydraulics don’t pass beyond the point of no return. No big deal there.
The PTO works to drive the brush hog Atleast. I did learn that the PTO must be I gaged to lift the 3 point which was something new for me.   Looks like the PTO provides power to the rear hydraulics. Does this sound right to you guys?

Good to know that the air cleaner assembly will be easy to find. Do I need to plan to find an original AC assy from the same few years? Or are their aftermarket ones that fit universally?

One of the front loader arms must have gotten water in it that froze because it is bulged out and cracked. It won’t be a problem to get that squeezed back in and welded.     

Looks to have the 12V conversion, but the battery seems a bit small. What size 12V do you guys run if you’ve done the conversion?

I’m located in Central Iowa. Just north of Adel, rural Dallas County.   

If there are any local experts on this forum shoot me a PM if you’re willing to provide your co tact info. My uncle and a local farmer helped me out looking at the tractor . My uncle is an encyclopedia with old equipment but legitimately said he does t have much experience with an AC. He was able to give some great insight in general. Although I’m glad I did my ow. Research because he had no idea how to start it after turning the key.   I Atleast knew what levers did what.   

Side note. The “drop gears” for the rear axle… these provide for a larger gear ratio for more power without taking up room in the transmission…. Am I understanding that correctly?

Finally.   Can someone give me a quick reference on what fluids I need? Oil, Transmission, Coolant(mixed 50/50?) rear end ?
I read some information on oil for warm weather and cold weather but am hoping to not change the oil every winter and spring. Can I get away with a certain weight for both?   

Thanks for all of the help.   I think I’m going to offer $1500 for everything and go from there. The owner needs to sell it before the property sale closes on Nov. 1st. Otherwise he has to move it or leave it for free to the new owners.   That’s going to work out in my favor I think. It certainly needs a lot of love and work so I do t want to get into it for too much. $2000 is going to be my absolute top dollar.

-- air cleaner assemblies should be easy to buy. Lots of old WD45 around and the air cleaner is not something that normally wears out.. Someone on the forum should have one for sale.

--12 volt conversion is good.. Make sure the battery cables are good, not cracked or corroded on the ends.. Battery is what ever fits in the box.. Even a small 12 v battery will spin the motor over better than the old 6v. ... is this a GENERATOR or ALTERNATOR conversion ?

--Your uncle will be a tremendous help... ALL "OLD TRACTORS" share a lot of common problems and solutions.. Specifics you can get here by asking questions.

--YES.. the Allis tractors have a FINAL DRIVE DROP BOX with a big gear reduction after the transmission/ differential...to drop speed to the tires.. Very common for ALLIS.

--Most will use a 10w-30 motor oil in the engine.. Even a 15w 40 is fine if you have that handly on the farm... There are "universal tractor fluids"-- UTF  -- Hydraulic/ Trans fluids-- etc... Get this at Farm Store, NAPA, Wal Mart, etc.... it is OK for the hydraulics / loader / transmission, everything behind the engine... When you get to the FINAL DRIVE GEAR BOX , that would be better with a 80-90 gear lube.. YES, antifreeze is the old green or the Extended Life Yellow - 5 year/150,000 mile type fluid..

What hydraulic pump operates the loader? Is there a pump in front of the grill, down low? The 3 pt arms should only lift when the clutch is let out. The hydraulics should be the same, only powered when the clutch is let out. Technically a WD45 would not have 3pt arms so maybe it has a conversion kit on it. I would like to see some pictures...

Hello FireMedic,
Have fun wiht your new WD45. I have one too and it's a fun tractor that's easy to work on.
The PTO doesn't need to be engaged for the hydraulics to work. The PTO and hydraulics only run when the foot clutch is engaged. Meaning, if you push the foot clutch, the hydraulics and PTO (if turned on) will stop.

The PTO will stop when you press the foot clutch but will continue to run if you use the hand clutch.

Best I have right now.

There is an alternator conversion.

Rear tires at new maybe a year old. Fronts have some mild cracking but are in decent shape.
Thanks for the info on the fluids.
The rear 3 point lift : black knob below steering wheel operates PTO, left handle above steering wheel is the lift for PTO.

I’m going to talk to the owner today and try to make a deal. The plan currently is to try to drive it the 15 miles home because I can’t find anyone with a trailer wide enough that is available.   I’ll check all the fluids before I leave and will disconnect the mower for the drive. It’s all back highways and it’s harvest time so people around here are used to tractors on the roads and shoulders. I’ll be able to take gravel for about 1/2 of the drive. I’m actually looking forward to it.     I’ll get more pictures the next time I’m out there.

Those rear tires greatly increase the value of that tractor.

Drive with the bucket low to keep your center of gravity low for high road speeds.

Get a slow moving vehicle sign mounted visibly. Chase vehicle with blinkers is good too.

See if the seller has any other old iron in the weeds/woods like plow disk cultivator planter that fit the tractor and strap it on the mower deck. Anything may help next spring. Old carb etc on shed shelf can help later. A lot of these trinkets get junked in that kind of move and you can use them. Worth asking.
