Nearly every ELD out there is a Open Sore to the Trucking Industry, if not being tampered with by Companies or Drivers now open to Bluetooth or other WiFi tech, absolute garbage.

I'm not an expert but if someone wants they could attack anything from your cell phone to new household appliances. New cars to new semis. Anything computer controlled.

Just think, Thousands of US Trucks equipped with this garbage, China gets a Wild Hair, sets them all to Over Time of Duty and shuts them Down, INSTANTANEOUSLY. Wrecks will be spectacular. Add to that the Self Driving/Parking Features, another access point for Cars/lighter trucks, set off alarm systems and shut the engines off, no matter where at.

Lot of problems now with the ELD systems not meeting the DOT regs and companies being banned from using certain systems .
When I quit driving paper logs were still being used but slow changeover to ELD was just a few months out from becoming a reality for the company . Another problem was computer control of trucks where 68 had been the set speed they dropped it to 62 MPH - now try driving on Interstates with 70 MPH or higher speeds and you can only make 62 MPH - then along with the fact driver time or rates to driver were not changed so you spent more time on road , could not make destination in time allotted and could not make a place to park when your hours were up . Met a guy in Chicago when making a delivery , he said he just got a call from his dispatcher of why he was in TX - seems that little white dome on his truck had a GPS sending unit that gave dispatch his location whenever dispatched wanted to check on truck . He said it was the 5th unit he had that went bad , seems a resistor in circuit board didn't take well to having heat applied to it by some outside force - like his lighter Edited by Coke-in-MN - 23 Mar 2024 at 5:01pm |

What the argument was in allowing trucks to drive FASTER back in the day was Fatigue, Less time drooling on one's self puttering along at 55 to 62 and getting to a pickup or delivery site in reasonable time saved and LESS Fatigue. New DOT personnel in Washout DC or the individual states really have no clue as to what they do, they just do. At the current rates and delays by DOT incessant rules changes, the appeal to return to Rail Freight where Local trucks P&D from the Rail Docks to delivery Warehousing is returning, just limited rail space or additional Lines to get it done now and the once prolific switchyards are fewer still.
