John Deere used a 3 terminal start switch on some older gas tractors... The third terminal supplied power to the coil ( around the RUN resistor) for startup... After starting, the coil was supplied power thru the resistor at a reduced voltage... IM not sure what a 3 terminal switch would do on a diesel... Power to "something" only when cranking, then off ..

Many of those old tractors had an insulated, (non grounded) magnetic switche to engage the starter. One applied both power, and ground to the switch. I've seen this more on Dyer type drives than Bendix types however.
