Hugger Gathering Chain Shaft

   Bought a cheap 6R30 Hugger at auction yesterday. I only have 15 acres of corn this fall so I decided to take a chance on it and see whether or not its worth putting money into. Going through  and pulling the gathering chains off to get the idler sprocket plates freed up and found one of the gathering chain shafts a little loose. It's got ~ 1/4" up and down play, and maybe 1/8" side to side. All the other shafts appear fine, a little play here and there but nothing excessive. 

Looking at the parts diagram it looks like the only thing holding the shaft down is a spring between the top of the gear and the bottom of the cover plate. It also looks like it would all come out of the top of the gearbox with the box still on the header. Is it possible that the spring broke and is letting the shaft and gear move up and down? If that's the case how critical is it that it gets fixed now vs this winter after 15 acres?

Another thing odd is most of the drive sprockets don't have a key in them, just a bolt. Talking to our local parts supplier when I was picking up gathering chains they said it's common for people to only run a bolt so it breaks before it shears the bottom key in the gear. It makes sense but is that a normal thing to do on these heads?

	Key and bolt here. Key slots get wobbled out over time. That drive sprocket wasn’t one of the better moments in engineering.
	8030 and 8050MFWD, 7580, 3 6080's, 160, 7060, 175, heirloom D17, Deere 8760
