While working on my 185, I noticed the wire to the alternator is totally fried as well as to the starter. I’m replacing the wires and the amp meter and putting in a volt meter. I was gonna run my alternator directly to my battery and sill have the starter run to the + side of the voltmeter. I’m no wire guru so I’m hoping I can get my buddy out here sometime soon to lend a hand but in the meantime I’m wondering if someone can provide me with some advice. Thanks!

Just route wiring like it originally was. Running direct to the battery cable end will be nothing but maintenance keeping it clean and tight. It does nothing to improve performance.

Oh ok. The starter was hooked up to one side of the amp meter and the alternator was hooked up to the other. So on the voltmeter would I hook the starter to the positive and alternator to the negative then?

 I'd hook voltmeter to a "LIVE w/key on" terminal on key switch that way it will only show voltage with key switch ON. 
 Have you determined why the wire was burnt? 
 Amperage/current flows thru the ammeter so it can show the Amps. flow from Alt to ammeter to 1/2" battery terminal on starter.

Tim.... a volt meter and amp meter work on completely different principles.. An AMP meter goes IN THE LINE to see what is passing thru it.. A VOLT meter goes AROUND the line to see what voltage is in the WIRE.... This is not your specific system, but look how the VOLT METER is connected .... normally you just go from a HOT WIRE to the GROUND ( frame) of the tractor....you want your voltmeter to TURN OFF when you turn the key off... thats why it is not connected to the battery or alternator terminals.

presently your AMP meter is IN LINE between the  battery + ( starter lug) and the alternator...
