Local haulers been hauling literally Hundreds of thousands of tons of the stuff to Cement companies around the state, some grades are good enough to use for Clay tiles and are sent to flooring makers but largely the mineral(NOT Soil Clays) in the central midwest have become the plasticizer for Cement in tonnage I never dreamed possible.  Are reopening old clay pits, dragging out the tiniest deposits for these functions so are coming to a waypoint that should be discussed.

Clay has long been a Cement for Concrete additive, kilned it has close properties to Volcanic Ash which the Roman's used in their concrete.  Seems oddly less than desirable as Clay is essentially dirt where Dirt is a contaminant in cement products.  Yet I digress, if Clays deposits are getting so slim, what is next for cement as the plasticizer?  Are we going to see a inability to produce adequate Cement and Concrete end products to continue human expansionist growth, cement as well is falling short in mines across the supplying midwest?  Highways, Foundations, piping to move detritus and waste water underground, are we coming to a limiter on human growth?  Add to that the decline of Refining Petroleum as that is perpetually noted as "Running Dry" where Asphaltic Concrete is a major player in roads work is a after refining byproduct as Bunker Oil.  What will roads and bridges end up constructed of?  Those White and Green or Blue PVC Pipes are Petroleum base materials.

The other weird point of Kilning Cement and Clay is it takes extreme heat, of which the only adequate fuel to do so is Hard Coal used by these companies, they also intermix Hazmat Liquid fuels or leftovers that have to be incinerated to destroy them, how will they end up going away?

Fly Ash Facts for Highway Engineers

Introduction

The use of fly ash in portland cement concrete (PCC) has many benefits and improves concrete performance in both the fresh and hardened state. Fly ash use in concrete improves the workability of plastic concrete, and the strength and durability of hardened concrete. Fly ash use is also cost effective. When fly ash is added to concrete, the amount of portland cement may be reduced.

Benefits to Fresh Concrete. Generally, fly ash benefits fresh concrete by reducing the mixing water requirement and improving the paste flow behavior. The resulting benefits are as follows:

  • Improved workability. The spherical shaped particles of fly ash act as miniature ball bearings within the concrete mix, thus providing a lubricant effect. This same effect also improves concrete pumpability by reducing frictional losses during the pumping process and flat work finishability.

EPA Killed that, Clay has been used in Cement production over 60 years, about the same time that Concrete quality went to the waste can.  Cannot find what was used prior to 1950 as to that plasticizer.

EPA "Claimed" Fly Ash contained "HUGE Quantity Mercury" to which no one has located that study or any facts to support.  ANOTHER EPA Non Legislated RULE.

All the resources we have to mine or drill for in this country we can't go after because it is bad for the environment or somebody doesn't want it in THEIR back yard. The one resource people have no problem wasting is farm land as long as they can build a house road or factory on it. They don't let things like ash be recycled in the concrete but it will have to be disposed of any way somehow.

I've been out the the cement testing sense 2016 but back then and as late as 2020 fly ash was being use in the mix design for IADOT mixes, If I remember I'll call my lab mate and see it they still do, I do know that recycle mat was just starting to come into the picture but not with good results unless they know the source of the mat being used.

Not concrete but when I was driving tanker , Hauled a lot of used motor oil over to WISC blacktop plants as they fired their blacktop kilns with that as fuel for heating the mixture .
Odd that it was not used much in MN but i did haul used oil from Iowa terminal into Northern MN blacktop plant .  Then when empty went to Duluth and loaded waste oil to haul to Mid Wisconsin .

At nearly all the cement plants are Rail Sidings of cars HAZMAT Labels of 1993 and 3267, for Kiln Disposal, the High Sulphur Hard Coals, Coal piles at these installations, REQUIRED to attain high enough BTU value to Kiln out the Cement is usually a Barge worth per day, right at 600t.
