Will a hydraulic pump off a series IV D-17, bolt on to the belt pulley location of a series I D-17? Is there some gearing that will make it not work?

No , I am sure it can be done but be better off with a front mounted pump. Would probably have to swap parts from an existing tractor to make it happen

I researched that possibility many years ago. Of course the pump will bolt up to the housing, but will it work like you want? NO. The series 4 torque tube had to be redesigned inside for the side mount pump to work as intended.
