was it Blue Metallic like used on a lot of Kohler motors ?

Search Vintage Sled Paint on ebay.  That is the paint I used on ours.

this guy apparently mixes quart cans to the exact color match.... If you want a rattle can, you will have to take a motor piece to the auto store and match up "close".

I used his aerosol cans,  it sprayed and covered good.  Would use it again.

I too would guess a “Kohler blue-green” engine color. Seems a lot of optional engines were painted a black color~ be my second guess? For fun, maybe paint it “Big Al” purple?

Black was the 'replacement engine' color.  Kohler would use an OEM-specified color, so seeing one in orange, yellow, red, green, blue, or white is not unusual, and if you find a tractor that'd normally have... for example, a yellow OEM motor, and it was replaced at one time, the replacement was frequently black.  Kohler's factory colors for the K-single were frequently a gold, blue-green, or (particularly for marinized engines) white.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
