Youngest son with his oldest son about 10 went hunting Squirrells yesterday morning and got 7 reds. 5 were males and 2 females. 3 of the 5 males were castrated. My dad told me when we were about the same time frame age wise as they are, that the mature males would check nest for young males and bite there nuts off to lesson competition.
Ruthless bunch out there. Good eating none the less for being a tree rat.

Reminded me of squirrel hunting a few (DOZENS) of years back, got a FEW Larger Red Squirrels, all Males, were hung like Jersey Bulls, getting the hide off them was like removing your own appendix, painful and Difficult. Woman we were taking them to looked at the big ones and said, Gonna take a while to get them chewable and she was right. Threw a few of them away after cooking as needed a chainsaw to slice up. Tougher than shoe leather.

Never had a problem with being tough.
I cook them slow. Meat to me has a sweet taste. Like them a lot better than rabbit.

Hey Fixer,,,We "used to do" a similar method on cottontails some time ago,,,and I say "some time ago", as we have not seen any cottontails around here in several years!! THey must be in that cycle,,,We used to wait till first snow to get the .22's and head out to the sandhills and most usually bag 10 to 20 cottontails and pull that fur starting at rear legs and just PULL towards the front feet and pull the skin off in one pull!! Chit, I ain't ate rabbit in at least 10 years,,,,

I am still confident of this;
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Ps 27 |

We have quite a few black ones where I live, never heard anyone talk about the taste. Probably some ordinance about killing them like white deer.

Have to say this, buddy one time asked me what Blue Berries or Rare Red Meat tasted like as had NEVER eaten either. Asked him if ever tried Blue stuff or Red stuff before, said could not build the courage, so I explained VERY Slowly that the taste of Blue was really similar to yellow but different as well addictive and that Red is so close to Brown but Not that to taste it might burn his tongue out. He thought I was being serious until stated Purple is weird but not as weird as Green and totally different than Violet.
