Can anyone verify that this starter will or will not work on an HD5G with a 2-71 Detroit Diesel?

I've replaced several 40, and 42MT series starters with 39MT series. As long as the rotation, and tooth count are the same, it will be a slip fit. The former starter will have it's rotation stamped into the tag.

No need for the extra - just use the 42MT as its easier to find used and works fine for most applications - A 2-71 sure doesn't need a gear reduction .
I traded my old starter in on a 42MT so got a core credit on rebuilt unit - Edited by Coke-in-MN - 10 Mar 2022 at 11:45am |

We did the first engine start test run today using the new 39MT starter on the HD5G.
I have never seen any diesel engine do a cold start quicker than this 2-71 did today. I had my Fluke 88 meter connected to read and record the voltage at the starter, as well as my clamp-on ammeter to check current draw while my Son-in-law cranked it over. The throttle was set at idle, no ether, it didn't spin over more than three turns and it wasrunning. I didn't even have time to look at the ammeter so I missed that reading entirely. Ambient temperature was about 60 F and the machine was sitting in the direct sun all morning; this is the warmest day we have had this year, so conditions were quite favorable. The old starter was an unknown quantity and was undoubtedly not in good condition, so this was certainly not a valid scientific comparison, but suffice to say we are very pleased with the results. Cranking speed is everything to a diesel engine, and this starter cranks significantly faster than the old unit. |

Thanks for the update and feedback. Your experience mirrors mine in most regards with the 39MT series replacing the older style(s).
