Is a series II D17 diesel supposed to be positive or negative ground?  I have the factory generator.

All D17s were positive ground.  I changed mine to negative though.

What do you have to do to change it over?  Or did you put an alternator on it?

Change wires on coil around. Hot wire from IGN switch to + on coil. From - on coil to DIST stud. Change battery cables to NEG ground. Then repolarize regulator by taking a short wire and jumping BAT to GEN. This is assuming you have kept the factory generator and not switch over to alternator. If you do switch it over to alternator you still do all of the stuff listed with the exception of repolarizing the voltage regulator.

Do as Don said, plus switch the wires on the ammeter guage.  I kept the generator on mine, just wanted it consistent for boosting other vehicles.
