I have posted before that 1/2 inch CDX plywood was about $18. last spring (2020). then $35 later in the fall.. and took a BIG JUMP this spring to $75. I have been monitoring the local MENARDS store online for their prices.
They were selling 300 sheets a month at the beginning of this year. RAised the price to $75. and have sold 2 sheets in the last 2 weeks... I guess people have decided what the BREAK POINT is. If you cant increase the SUPPLY, you can CUT THE DEMAND with your buying !

I needed a couple of 3/4" pieces to set a couple of mailboxes on, really didn't want to buy a whole sheet. went to box store, hoping for a reject, or end cut. awha! 24"x48" piece of treated.....$32! Oh well, at least it is treated. I set the mailboxes up tomorrow.
funny thing is, the person they sold the piece to that they cut for probably paid full price for the plywood

Local Lowes is trying to sell 7/16 x 4 x 8 OSB for $49.55 this week. About 2 years ago it was well under $10.00 a sheet. It's a wonder they sell any lumber now. How could anyone afford to build anything? Seems like I heard this week that someone wants to double the tariff on Canadian lumber.

Look into 1x6 piece's of cedar for the underbelly of the mailboxes , it's a much better fit "height wise "

I recently had $12300.00 in plywood delivered to a job.
A year ago it would have been just over $1800.00 |

I was just in home depot today. They have the $40 something OSB, $75 plywood and $10.50 2x4's. They have plenty of stock, so I don't see a shortage. I also don't see much of the new priced lumber going out the door. So people are responding. Any one know where in the supply chain the price increases are happening? |

Can't answer your "supply chain" question, but the REAL home town lumber yards that supply the local builders (that do NOT jack with box stores) can't keep up with job site deliveries

I saw one builder near us that went back to using 1x6's for the roof decking. Guess it must be cheaper than plywood at this point.

Many off work or locked down at home last year.. Govt passing out FREE MONEY.. People started projects and ran late into the fall and this spring. Supply was running short because DEMAND is so high... People are catching on and STOP the projects or postpone the final.... This slow down in DEMAND should help the SUPPLY SIDE and prices will start to drop.

On April 25, 2017, the US imposed a tariff up to 24% on lumber imported to the US from Canada. In return, Canada slowed their imports.
When the COVID pandemic hit, production from both countries was slowed more. With increased demand from Americans receiving stimulus money and elevated unemployment benefits, along with more people homebound, led to sharply increased demand. Supply could not keep up with demand, so prices soared. |
