how much faster of a road speed will you get with 38's vers 28"?  I used my brothers 560 the other day and i was amazed how fast it went down the road will a 17 with 38" wheels come close to the speed of a 560?  Wanting to haul manure with it need to shorten travel time

I have 14.9 x 38 on my D-17 IV diesel. It moves along nicely but I never checked the actual speed.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

I do not think you will be as fast as a 560.
They have a fast road gear.

You did not say which size 28's you have. It would be about 30% faster with 14.9 38 vs 16.9 28. The 560 is geared for 38 in. tires, the D17 is not. You would loose that much pulling power also. In my opinion it would be difficult to handle.

A D-17 at 2,000 RPM with 16.9 x 28 rear tires that measure 56 inches tall (26.5 inch loaded radius) and no weight on them will travel 15.0 MPH according to the owners manual. The tallest 38's are 14.9 x 38 which measure 63 inches tall no weight on them. This would calculate to 16.8 MPH at the same 2,000 engine RPM. A pair of 15.5 x 38's are a little bit shorter at 61 inches and would yield 16.3 MPH. If you give that D-17 an extra 100 RPM (easy to do) the 16.8 MPH becomes 17.6 MPH and 16.3 MPH becomes 17.1 MPH.  Those Farmall's are FAST and if they get an extra 100 RPM or so, they go even faster !!!!

One other thing about the 560, gas at least. Rated rpm's were 1800. It is very easy to bump that to 2400 or 2600. This coming from a retired IH mechanic friend of mine.

My dad's uncle and cousin lived next door to us.  Where our D17s would pull a bale wagon full of hay up a hill in high gear their H and M Farmalls almost couldn't pull themselves up the same hill.
