Was seeing a lot of people saying the 3 bolt pivot plate was a bit weak, I decided to build a new pivot plate that's much larger, it will be attached to the frame rails with some 3/8 angle, via 2 bolts per side, the original pivot plate will be bolted/stacked in front, but I would also like to drill and tap 2 additional bolt holes i to the steering gearbox, I'll post pics of the locations I have chosen, I would sure appreciate some opinions, unless its freakout over it not being original lol

I have my 2 possible bolt holes marked and pre-drilled, I need to know if it is a safe location

I have no idea as I'm not highly familiar with WD tractors, however as I see that you are obviously overloading and abusing you WD with the loader (this is evident with the plate welded into the front of the loader frame), you will soon find the next weak link.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

Hi,
Good looking WD45. Yes the loader systems and years of use can wear the 3 bolt connections to that front casting. I have seen bad ones but a lot of folks have seen them survive forever too. Its all about how hard they were used. I did a front end swap on the WD that was my Uncle Jacks. The donor casting was just a little better but still needed work and had been drilled and tapped several places already. I ended up with a 7 bolt plate that is larger but of similar shape. I still have parts of the plate my uncle put on the tractor to keep the front together. Like you he wend out to the frame rails and added plate along the rails. Just a warning, unless you already got there. Those bolts on the side rails of the casting can be easy to get out or they can be rusted and break off in a 1/4 turn. BTDT.
 I think you will be happy with the mods, and its your tractor, and if you need to make it back to factory original someday the parts are available. 
Your tractor looks to be in pretty good condition.
I would like to have a dollar for every scoop of manure I loaded with one of those tractors!
Not the most user friendly units to run but as a kid it didnt matter I was doing something with a tractor.

Good to know I can tap it, I've only had it maybe 2 months, was a "lawn ornament" that sat for years, the guy I got it from did weddings and stuff on his property, so it was just there for pictures, rebuilt the carb and cleaned the tank and plugs and fired right up, shoulda seen his face, but now I'm just going thru it before I put it to work, if there is anything else I should be looking at I would be grateful to know thanks guys

I see you are only using grade 5 bolts make sure to replace them with grade 8 or something stronger. the correct torque and lock-tite will assure you that that won't be the weak link.

The original bolts were only grade 5, I was thinking of putting grade 8 on the side rails, not sure what the shear strength of grade 8 vs cast iron is

I put some racing stripes on my truck as a teenager, with my name in one of them, and been doing it ever since, I just go and buy some letter stickers, I'll put down Persian 1 lay the stickers, go over it with persian 2, then peel the stickers, perfect letters every time, I think it will look neat

I guess it'd help,that said we ran a 3 bolt front WD45 for years of hard use with a loader at times and never had a problem with the front.Keeping the bolts tight is the key,once they get loose problems come up seen it many times.With what you have fabbed up I would weld some sort of bracket off the side rails to  connect to the new plate,not go into the housing.

I was planning on both, I've got it connected to one side rail last night, and will do the other side when I'm off work, I'll post a pic of that when I get home, I assume the bolts came loose at some point, when I got it the plate only had 2 bolts, the bolt hole on the right was blasted out the side and the plate was very very twisted, also the rod for the hand crank is bent and looks like the plate slammed into it, i assume they didnt realize there was an issue until there was only one bolt and the crank rod holding it up lol

You did a very nice job on the fab work! Clean and detailed! I know this is going to be a strong fix for the rest of the tractors life. 
I see that you might have acquired the WD sickness, as you mentioned that your were going to get another WD series tractor too. That can be a problem!Smile

Looks good..... a suggestion..... I'd lay another big fat bead of weld over the top of the weld connecting the side plates to the front plate. Or two smaller beads one to better connect the side plate to your original weld and another to connect better the front plate to your original weld.

Thank you sugar maker, I think your right I had the wd tricycle now the wd45, and just picked up another wd with an added wide front end, too many projects lol, thanks for the suggestion lonn, i am by no means a good welder, and i won't even pretend to know what I'm doing, if the weld happens to break, i will layer it for sure

In the process of doing this I lost the pin on the hand crank starte, any idea what size dowel or maybe a roll pin would work, btw you wouldn't believe how easy these are to start up by hand

I don't think the 3 bolt was too weak but fasteners were too close together allowing it to work loose easily. My junkyard 3 bolt had been ran loose for so long that all the holes were wallowed and bosses worn. I welded up holes,put in studs and welded plates to the outside edge with 2 studs tapped into casting per side. It kinda mimics the later 4 bolt. Carried a 100gal spray tank out front for lseveral years with no problems. Not pretty but works.

Also did you find the size width and length pin for the hand crank rod. I assume a split roll pin may work but would like to buy the right size from hardware store instead of a case of various sizes.
Thanks and again awesome work and loved it. Very practical especially for someone still using a loader and now you can use it pretty darn hard and not worry.
