 Topic: Allis Chalmers G Brake Job

I have two "G"s and one has perfectly functioning brakes and the other one is what you would refer to as "incredibly dangerous". That is the one I would love some help with. I have the service manual and original manual. My question is can i take the wheel off and leave the axle attached and slide the axle housing out to access the brake drum? And if so will i be able to insert it back together with out replacing the differential carrier oil seal or is that recommended?

Best I can remember Yes. I broke an axel, and replaced it myself, but it's been maybe 30 years. I have a Parts Catalog for the G. If you would like I can try to e-mail you a copy of the page, covers brake and axel.

only way to get to drums and brake shoes is to remove the complete housing, no way I'd pull one apart without replacing the seals. FYI most drums end up being cut off with a torch.

I have a hard time posting pictures. So I got these posted, then discovered that they are on the wrong topic. They were met for hydraulic controls on the G. Sorry about that. I'm going to try to post a scan of the G brakes from my Parts Catalog.

If only the pads need replacing, I don't see where that would be that hard. If it's the drum, good luck. When I broke the axel, it looked like it had work harden, not just twisted off. That drum is extremely tight with the half moon key. The axel had broken at the splines. And I could not get the drum to move, so I cut it off inside the drum and then drilled it with a large enough bit so that it clasped enough to loosen it.

I don't believe that you need to pull the drums to replace the pads. I order to replace the seals you would have to pull the drums.

Those two pictures were to have gone to a post about the hydraulic controls on the G. I can't find where I meant them to go. Search will not work because it will not allow you to use 1 letter words.

to replace the shoes alone, it's not bad, I agree on drum removal, if it's not the threaded cast ones I don't even try. The inner seals were the ones I was referring to changing.

You need to take the whole axle housing off as the brake shoes need to be gotten too. I just did one and there was plenty of linings left but they were oil soaked. Be sure to replace the axle seal on the side of the transmission even if bot needed as eventually they will. Be sure to support the tractor properly so it does not fall on you, I put an extra jack stand under the foot rest so the tractor can't tip. If you need help call me 440-812-8475

Wow thank you guys! I have shoes on the way and I will try and find the inner seals and order a pair if anyone knows the best place to find those little buggers. I was going to try and get it started this week as my wife uses the tractor all the time and says she will not be getting back on it until its fixed. The governor was surging (fixed now by 4 turns of the adjust screw) and it stalled on a hill and I guess it was a little nerve racking. The other G is fully restored and I try and keep it out of the woods. I will try and post some photos for future reference.
