So I was talked into helping the neighbor moonlight in his shop. His daughter took the 2005???? 2008??? I can't remember it don't matter, Honda Odyssey van to the dealer for a timing belt. Well the dealer performed the service and messed up on something because once the motor started they had terrible sounds and now a big miss. I knew right away they bent some valves. So I went to help fix this van. We have it apart and the heads will go in to the machine shop this week.
Any way I got to doing some research on different things and I found a few specialty tools that I think I may need. For example the heavy wall socket for the crank shaft bolt. I also see people brag up the valve lash combination screwdriver/socket tool used to assist in getting the lash set. But my main interest is in buying a cam gear holding tool. When this head goes to the machine shop he's going to want everything out of the head that's not relevant to his job. So I need a way to hold the gear when I go to tighten the nut. What do yo guys suggest. I see all kinds of choices. I kind of like the otc universal tool that is adjustable and comes with different size interchangeable pins. |

If the dealer didn't fix it I'd be finding a lawyer! As for the gear, what torque are you looking at? Wouldn't an impact get it tight enough, but a strap wrench would work too. If you're putting a new chain on it then use the old chain to make a wrench with a pair if vise grips or something.

I'm not sure why the dealer was cut out of the picture. I know there owner is far from happy with the dealer. The guy I'm working for is 55 years of age. This van belonged to his daughter.
I never really got into why the dealer isn't picking up the tab here. Ive asked questions and never got a real decent answer. Plus he said the daughter was going to take care of it. I don't know I was just happy to get the evening cash job plus he's buying me the tools I need. So as I see it cash money, tools, food, and drinks all in exchange for fixing the car. BOb, I have not used the cam holder tool, but I know a lot of the guys that do work on double cam motors have the OTC tool.. You have to hold everything in the right position when the chain and tensioners are installed and vice grips or pipe wrench don't work. If its a single cam motor, maybe not a big deal. We use to rebuild Honda over head motor cycle engines ( single cam) all the time without a tool.
