Thanks again for some very helpful information.  Unfortunately the lift truck sold, but now that I know about parts and issues with smoking motors, I’ll be more inclined to look at these units more positive.  Happy Holidays Eric B!

That is a good price. I take it to be current with starting and running. If it hasn't run for a few years and sitting outside that makes it somewhat uncertain to its real condition. One of the two I bought had sat outside but not for too long BUT rain water ran down the edge of the hood in one place directly in line with the stud for the air cleaner. The engine gulped a lot of water and would not start. Had it stayed parked in that condition it would've made bad trouble for the engine. Once I dried out the cylinders with compressed air it started and ran fine. The other unit had the engine smoking much like the one you're interested in. After cleaning the air cleaner, reducing intake suction, the smoking stopped thankfully. For the most part a lot of replacement parts are universal and don't necessarily have to be Allis-Chalmers. I had no trouble that way. Wish you all the best!

Thanks...I understand the engine smokes but just about everything else works.  It’s been setting outside for a few years so things look rough.  I haven’t decided to buy or pass.  The owners got it in a deal with something else. Their asking price is $1300 but would take $900.  My concern is availability of parts.  Thanks again for your information.  Ps. I have not seen the piece in person do to the fact it’s 3 1/2 hour away, one way!

I have had two FTP 40's and they were both great, of course conditions vary so it's worth checking out the essentials just like buying any equipment. If the engine runs good, fwd and reverse movement is good, no big oil leaks, brakes are no big deal to fix, some oil leaks are nasty to address... you'll soon know if it is right for you... price needs to be fair to the shape it is in.
