Dr,
Thank you for the comment!  I haven't seen a button clutch. I does have what I believe is a 9 spring pressure plate. Should I be able to see the difference from the underside of the tractor through the inspection hole? 
Its a fairly loud whine/growl/ vibration as the foot clutch is engaged. 
If the tractor is not in gear engine running and you work the foot clutch there is no noise.

Folks,
 This WZ tractor has a problem in the drive line that I need some help from the experts on. Tractor running. Push in foot clutch put in gear. Hand clutch is engaged. Let foot clutch out slow and there is a growling noise in the clutch area or drive line. 
If you disengage the hand clutch and let the foot clutch out while in gear, then pull back the hand clutch there is no noise. Would this be the pilot bushing in the flywheel? or the small bushing between the front and rear drive shaft? 
Tractor tries to move just a little when the hand clutch is disengaged. and the foot clutch is let out. Just a little movement of the machine, like the hand clutch is trying to grab?
I have greased the throw out bearing. That did not seem to help

Dave, Mike,
 No I did not load up and go. Was very wet the night before and were predicting rain at pull time too. 
I whimped out and did some other tasks.
The WZ was called in to service to pull down some dead ash trees that my son was cutting for fire wood. I dug some pretty good ruts!:)
Will see if I got any pictures? Well I did not do good and get any WZ pictures. But here is one with Eric on the old WD wide front.

Most pulls here are "stone" boat on dirt events. Don't use stones anymore - all concrete blocks, now. Nothing like watching (and watching and watching and...) a tractor calmly pulling that boat 100' in 1st gear. My wife says it's like watching paint dry. Wink

Folks,
First pull of the year in our area is tomorrow. May take this old WZ. I have a bunch of weights for it. Would also like to see what it weighs with the new rear wheels (solid not spin out). I believe I will be a little less than 3500 and may need to add some weights.


The pull is a stone boat on dirt I think. I have never tried that. Might be able to get the light pulls in before the predicted rains.
I still have those set of good spin out 28 inch rims. I should probably sell. Dont really need them for a tractor now!

Good work, (as always) Chris. Your homemade gaskets look great. Local Agco dealer still stocks them here, just picked up a set for the D-17.

There are 'snap-ring pliers' available for that style of ring. I have a couple pair, they work good.

Folks,
Well the broken WZ is coming back together:

Found the gaskets for the oil sumps in a roll of 3/32 gasket material:

I missed one hole some how:

Pulled in the new seals I did not put any sealer around the o.d. 



Used a piece of PVC to stage the spacer, bull gear, and snap ring:





Used guide pins to position the pans:

Got the inside small bearings in place, installed bolt washers and shim, then cap.
Wheels reinstalled and took it for a ride. All seemed good! No leaks yet!

Thanks I did not know that trick. Yes I miss Don (MO) and his wisdom and friendship!  I did have the side trumpets off my 45 but it needed brakes and seals and brake drum. Trying to not do as much work on this tractor. 
Took the day off and worked on a steel project for the proposed shop.

Chris, your posts are always awesome.One trick from our late friend Don, is take the mounting bolts and studs out ,if the studs will come loose,at the differential case and rotate the final 180.Now you don't have to stand on your head to get at that snap ring or balance the bull gear on a jack.Anyway keep us updated. By the way that rear support is a pretty darn slick set up.

Folks,
Couple things:
 I checked the engine oil and it had a very slight gray tint to it. Thought I might have a water problem. I drained some oil from the sump and let it set for a day and did not see any water. 


But after running it a little I check the dip stick again and it just looks like very clean fresh oil!

Next:
Cooper's WZ is in the shop. OK its not in the shop because I dont have one yet! With the very warm weather and a couple test drives I had massive amounts of oil coming out of both final drives. Worse than any I had seen. I knew the seals were leaking some when I changed the wheels.




So time to fix/ improve/ reduce the leaks! Didn't really want to do this but decided no one else was going to do it. So just started into the project of rear final drive lower seal replacement. Probably the only good news is that this is the 4th time so the moves are known:
Pulled off the weight bracket where the rock shaft mounts, then raise tractor and install rear support:


Rears off and cleaned up:

Pans pulled to drain over night. Temps were in 80's, nice evening to work under the stars!

The fluid looked like brown 5 weight oil. Nasty stuff!
next up pull the axles. If some one made a snap ring tool for these and then just let every one use it sure would make life easier! That may be the hardest part of the job for me. Any good tricks besides s couple screwdrivers?

As you can see I waited till the sun was directly overhead the next day, so I could have it shining directly int my eyes as I worked on getting those snap rings off. Of course the occasional drop of oil in the eye helps move things along too!
I tried tapping, ok beating on the bolt to move the final drive out. no go. decided to try a different approach. the port-a-power even groaned a little. But sure enough it eased out of its home position. I was rather proud I had though of this. A spot under the rear end worked perfect to push against. I was a little worried I might break a casting!

Also the port a power fit right through the small bearing cone:


Right side popped right out very easy compared to the left:



Support the bull gear with a floor jack: pull the final splined axle:

There was wear and a step in the seal surface about .010 deep.

The old seal National 55009? Both were pretty well shot. I tapped them out using a block of wood from the inside. The springs were exposed and the sealing surface not good.

Took the axles to machine shop and will have them turned under sized to clean up and add a small lead to slide inside the new seal.
The shaft was 2.750 dia will turn to 2.690. New seals will be 2.688 I.D x 3.875 o.d. x .469 thick. Ordered those  through Kaman industries and they will ship direct to house.


Bearings: Well This tractor is going to be a dedicated puller so I was trying to keep it low budget. Checked the bearings and races. Big outer cones were fine. Left outer race had just a small pit size of a pin head that I emery clothed smooth.
Left outer race had a bad spot, so I pushed it out with the air hammer and replaced with a better race from my my uncles WD finals. 
The right inner cone had several bearings with pits. Replaced that with a used cone from my Dads WD. 
Yes I know, I'm in there and it should be all new, but sometimes a guy just has to draw the line. :)


Another item: Right upper cover had ear broke off and two top bolts broke off too. I have no idea how this would happen?

I went to the parts tractor and pulled off the remaining cover:
Then removed the broken one and attacked the broken bolts.
The one on the back was loose and was removed by hand.
The front one was broken flush. I drilled about a 3/16 hole through it and grabbed the never work easy out. Well low and behold it took a little pressure and backed right out too!
Amazing!

Re used the shim pack  added sealer;

All better in that cover area;

Guess were going to keep it for a while!

Mike, Yes I have been eyeballing the painted rims on the D17 front too. They might look good swapped with these original rims?

Thanks! I like to similar things that your into on your 19 when I get a new unit. Now I am getting old and have CRS. I dont remember if I did any of that on this WZ?:)
Rainy, nasty, cold here this morning, it would be perfect for making syrup. 
Thinking hard on a new shed to hold some of these big toys too. 
Oh just turned to snow flurries here on the hill too, supposed to have sunny skies in a couple hours! Perfect!

That looks good to me Chris,I like it a lot....but I think I would have to do the front wheels at some point during some free time.Good looking set of wheels with aged sheet metal and a grunt under the hood,oh yeah true rat rod form right there and don’t forget that open chrome pipe too for that extra 15-20 hp😬
The D19 is coming along,gotta swap one front tire and get some rear fenders and it’ll be good.Dumped all the oil,new plugs and wires,belts,hoses. Just going through the mechanics and changing out the worn stuff,along with a few new bits and pieces.

Several moves on the WZ tractor.
Picked up 2, 9/16-18 bolts and made studs to ease the mounting of the wheels. That worked slick thanks to who ever suggested that!


Clearance to fender looks ok:


Installed wheelie bars and checked the dimension from ground to pad. Right on the 10 inch dimension. Also checked the width over the tries and it will still fit on the trailer! Let air out of the tires down to appropriate pressure. Then moved the "D" ring under the drawbar to get it to the 17 inch dimension.


These rims may take a little getting used to? But all things fit up good. Took it for a run down the road and back. No issues. Good for testing at a track in the future.

I use to have a timing light with a digital tach built in, was kind of handy but the thing was a total POS. Crapped out just out of warranty.

 I do have a D17 governor spring here somewhere. Have no idea whats in there now. Since it looks like some of the items were moved from a WD45 block to this engine.
At some point I need to get a tool to check RPM's. and then go from there. Goal would be to set the RPM's at the 10% higher than factory spec. Which I would have to find because I dont have that memorized.:)

Chris, I've got a WD that could use those Firestones but their a long way from Iowa!

D-17 governor spring AGCO part number 70229519 might help depending on what governor is currently on the engine.

The new tires and wheels look great!

Not sure on the fronts? Will see when I get these rears on. If I do much more the entire tractor will have to be spruced up!:)

Picked up the tires and rims for the WZ.

Look OK so far:

Just setting next to the 13.6-28's:


The Firestones and rims set aside for now thinking of maybe selling these. Any suggestions on value? I just paid $750 for the tires, tubes and mounting. Seems they should be worth north of $800 on the decent rims?

Folks,
 Wow time flies I finished those rims in January. New tires to be mounted tomorrow for the back of the WZ. These are going on the old painted rims that are way too wide (just right) 
I will try to get some pictures. 

Not sure if I am going to paint the wheel centers PO#1 and the lugs or just leave them crusty? Open for suggestions! Leaning towards a clean up and paint for the hubs. Just a little more bling. 
And looking back Ted voted for the orange centers and lugs, so were going for it! 

I really need to get a device to read RPM's and start to look at where this engine is running at now, and see if any improvements can be made, with just some adjustments.

Still not sure if and when we may have any tractor pulls this year? Time will tell. Need to be ready! 

This tractor should have the carb cleaned also.

Been busy but had to check back in on ya Chris and see how they turned out.Well I like’em and yeah they’ll look really good with some tires on and mounted up.

Folks,
 Dont paint on Krylon aluminum paint and then try to paint over it with Rustoleum. The Rustoleum is just now, a couple weeks later, getting dry to the touch. In hind site I should have not painted the aluminum under the cream. It will probably dry someday!
Next up new 14.9-28 tires when the piggy bank gets a few quarters in it again.
Looking forward to getting these and tires on the WZ.

I should be doing twelve things to get read for syrup season. We had warm temps yesterday. But about a month earlier than we tap.

The rims will have to grow on me. They look like they should go on a Oliver or something with non spin out rims. I do not plan to put wheel weights on this tractor. As I want to get into the 3500 lb class and it has a lot of components removed to reduce weight.

I did see a set of 8 bolt 38 inch x 14 wide for sale near by. Very tempting. Do I need them? No! 

As side note to moderators, I will mention again and I wont mind if this thread is moved to the pulling section of this forum. This tractor is headed in that direction for sure and it might clean up the forum a little. I know a lot of pullers dont want to give out their secrets. I dont have many secrets, and am really not planning on setting the world on fire with a old WD. Just having some fun, and another new toy and project.
